I hope the answer is not throwing them in the trash. Regardless if the device is still working or is broken, tossing an unwanted electronic in the trash is not the answer. What should you do instead? Why e-Recycle?
Electronic devices are not safe for regular trash because they often contain metals that are harmful to the environment such as mercury and lead. By separating your electronics to their own recycling, you will help keep these harmful chemicals out of waste streams. Many of today’s electronic items contain valuable elements such as gold, silver, copper, glass, and plastics, all of which can be reused if recycled properly. Be particularly mindful of any items that may be powered by a lithium-ion battery. These batteries are responsible for powering most of the items we use today, such as smartphones and laptops. Lithium-ion batteries were responsible for 65% of waste facility fires in California during 2017. These items should never be tossed out in the trash or regular recycling.
Where to e-Recycle?
- JHI – reach out to one of our experts today to see how we can help with your e-waste recycling needs. If an item is eligible to be reused, we’ll sort it accordingly. If not, we will see that it is responsibly recycled in an environmentally friendly way. We can also assist in wiping drives for privacy before items are recycled.
- Donate – if your item is in good working condition and you no longer need it, look into donating it for reuse or donating to a non-profit that specializes in e-waste recycling to handle on your behalf.
