INTERVIEW: NEWCOMER TIPPED BY FINNEAS, ILON

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Selfish Love”?

To me, selfish love is about being hurt one too many times. The other person sees your vulnerability as a chance to abuse you, to pretend to love you to feel good about themselves. At this point you’re already too broken to see through their malevolence. With nothing to lose, you throw yourself into it completely. Being in such a vulnerable state, it sucks to realize that the other person was never really in it wholeheartedly.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

The song was definitely inspired by something I was going through at the time. I had dug myself pretty deep into what turned out to be quite superficial. Looking back, I guess I had set my expectations too high and saw potential in something that was never supposed to work out. It’s pretty crazy how easily a person can bring you down simply by being insensitive and just a little bit too stuck up to see it themselves. That being said, it’s so important to know when to prioritize yourself over your feelings for someone else.

Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

For this one, we’re planning to make a simple lyric video. However, you can expect music videos for some of my upcoming releases!

How was the recording and writing process?

My producer Ilkka Wirtanen and I were in the studio to finish up some old demos. However, I had a lot on my mind and was feeling quite restless that day – so I practically begged him to create a new song with me. Ilkka then grabbed his guitar and put down a really pretty chord progression. I immediately sat down by the piano and the words and melodies just came to me. Ilkka and I joke around a lot and try not to take ourselves too seriously, which is why the recording process is always fun with him!

What role does Finland play in your music?

When I think of Finland, I think of its peaceful nature. The forest and sea help me reflect, reset and get through the stuff that’s on my mind. I prefer to gather my thoughts before I write songs about them – and that I do best when I’m close to nature.

Having the likes of Finneas and JC Stewart as fans plus your music getting much momentum with audiences – does that put any pressure on you as you work on a new material or rather the opposite?

Not really – I just feel incredibly grateful for every single person that appreciates the music that I pour my heart into. I used to be, sometimes still am, quite shy about singing and writing music, and feel like people’s positive reactions have only pushed me to be more daring and confident in what I do.

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than working on your own?

I get distracted quite easily, which is why I sometimes find it easier to immerse myself into my thoughts and music when I’m on my own. However, working with other people has taught me patience, new perspectives and forced me to question the way I’m used to approaching and developing my ideas. I love working with people that I share a passion and have good chemistry with, since they tend to bring out the best in me.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along? If all goes well, I’ll be releasing two more songs in 2020!

What else is happening next in ILON’s world?

I just moved into my own little apartment and started studying political science at Helsinki university – so in the next few months I’ll probably be writing lots of music, preparing for my upcoming releases, making new friends, reading textbooks and paying rent, haha!
