INTERVIEW: The Unlikely Candidates

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

We have been alright all things considered, just finished our streaming series we had been doing every Wednesday so that was bitter sweet. Other than that just writing as much as we can till all this blows over.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “High Low”?

Yeah we wrote it with our producer when we had a day off during tour a week before everything shut down. Then I finished the lyrics in quarantine. I recorded  the vocals in a makeshift recording booth in my closet.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Quarantine for sure. The song is about coming home from touring a realizing that everyone has moved on while you were gone. Jobs, families, moved away, etc. The character in the song is in his apartment feeling nostalgic and missing the way things were and his friends. Fits well for quarantine thematically.

Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

We are in the editing process right now so it will most likely be our early September.

How was the recording and writing process?

We added a lot of dreamily layers to the song to make it feel very melancholy but not in a totally sad way. Writing wise when I was home in quarantine I definitely borrowed from my experience and put a lot of what I was doing and feeling in the lyrics.

How did the whole lockdown environment get to influence the song?

Definitely added to the feeling of isolation and I’m sure a lot of the emotions of that made it into the track.

Was it any really challenging?

Wasn’t too bad, I was able to FaceTime my producer so he could help direct the vocal session. Other than that we record at home a lot so I’m fairly used to that.

After the major reception your previous single got – did you feel any real pressure while putting this new song together or rather the opposite?

We just try to write good songs and hopefully one stands out enough to be the next single. There was definitely pressure, but I just try to keep my head down and enjoy the process.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along? Any tentative release date or title in mind? Any plans to hit the road?

We are planning on putting an album out in January, a lot of new stuff on there. No title yet, I need to get on that. As far as the road we are just waiting to see what happens and we will follow suit.

What else is happening next in The Unlikely Candidates’ world?

Doing some streaming shows and writing music that’s about it for the moment. Would love to try out a drive in show, but we will see what the coming months has in store.
