To become a recognised musical artist it meant getting yourself out there and drawing in the crowds with the hope that you would start to become recognised by bigger venues. The idea is, the more your music is heard, the higher the chances are that a record label would want to sign you up.
All you need to is look at how NWA and Biggie Smalls made their way into the rap scene – just watch movies such as Straight Outta Compton, Beats, and Notorious for examples of some inspiring ways even new music was brought into the public eye.
Today, new genres of music are quickly finding their way into the limelight, However, they are not exactly all coming through a mini-concert, building street cred or getting a name by playing live. There are now websites such as SoundCloud or Spotify with online streaming that allow anyone to upload their music onto websites that have millions of visitors every month.
Music can stand out on these websites and end up with a record deal. The issue is getting music to be recognised but there are plenty of people on Facebook and other social media networks playing their music and driving friends, family, and fans to their download page and YouTube channels to get more likes, downloads and plays.
For a producer looking to sign new talent, the job just got a whole lot easier. Rather than word of mouth and a trip to see a band that turns out to have produced and performed one good song and not much else going for it, movie download platforms make the due diligence process for talent scouts far more efficient. As a result, wasted trips are a thing of the past which is why the volume of talent coming through is increasing.
A producer only needs to go and look for free downloads on Spotify or SoundCloud and listen to some of the most popular artists in each genre. They can then pick and choose the ones they think are likely to make it to the big time! Booking a trip to go and see the person in action is far more likely to turn up with a record contract than it would have in the past.
Of course, music platforms are just one way for music producers to find their talent. We also see new pop stars come through the ranks on hit TV shows like Pop Idol and more recently America’s Got Talent. Even those that do not win and get close can turn up with a music production deal.
Numerous musical talents have come through West End theatres and New York’s Broadway shows. Maybe not bands, but those in classical genres and country music.
Yet, word of mouth beats them all. It is still the number one way talent gets recognised. Although, today even word of mouth is easier to spread because the internet has so many social media channels to spread the word!
