INTERVIEW: Yana Toma

Hi Yana, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I have been amazing thank you. Since I have put my first single out it’s been a relief to finally showcase a taste of my art

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Next 2 You”?

This is my first single I have put out, it’s only a taster of what I can do, I would say the track is up-tempo, has a bounce and is a very fun track. It’s a bit feminine with a bit of masculine energy, and I would say it’s a UK current vibe.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I have a sensitive side to me which I express on the chorus being a female and feeling lost without your lover being close. It does show case the vulnerability and love I feel when your into someone.

How was the recording and writing process?

When I write I usually throw my melodies down first then add words. So it’s how you feel in the moment and most importantly how the beat makes you feel I just bounce off the vibe of the beat first. I had fun creating it with my friends Av Allure, Miles and Scratch.

How do you go on balancing your old sounds influences with your much modern sensibilities?

I really enjoy it, producers really do lead the sound in the room, and I then add my sound depending on the instrumental. I am very versatile and I’m made of all the new and old styles I listen to.

How has Nina Simone and Michael Jackson influenced your writing?

I love the story they always told and how they always reflected the times in the lyrics. I feel I have reflected the times today in the vibe of the song. This is just a taster, and I have more songs that when you listen to them, you will understand why they influence me.

What role does London play in your music?

Growing up in South London you naturally have an attitude. The weather is really an emotion and impacts how you feel. I love London and the multicultural aspect of it. I feel like if your an open person and you appreciate everything and choose to see the beauty in everything, you naturally become a seasoned vibe.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

I have a few singles ready to go and still creating more vibes. I actually worked on a lot just before the pandemic and thankfully I’m back in the studio.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

I have a other song coming out next month called “Drunk Text”.

What else is happening next in Yana Toma’s world?

I am currently working in the studio and will keep on releasing, so just grinding at this moment
