INTERVIEW: UK artist Tom King

Hi Tom, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Good thanks. I’m just back from a little holiday in Amsterdam.  It’s my favourite city.  I want to live there when I’m older.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Be That For Me”?

I wrote it myself when I was in Year 11 at school, so I was about 16.  I just went and sat in our music school at the piano and wrote it.  I put it up on Soundcloud and my friends all loved it and said it was their favourite, so when I started working with Paul Aiden, I thought it’d be good to rework it with him.  We changed it up and decided to do an arrangement on guitar and that’s what you’ll hear on the single.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

It wasn’t really a relationship. I started to catch feelings for someone but it was unrequited. I feel like they changed into this whole different person.  You just have to cut some people out of your life.

How was the filming process and experience behind  the video?

Me and my friend, Caitlin (who did the filming), decided that Frensham Ponds was a very nice area to do the video.  It was also good that it was near my old schoo, where I wrote the songl.  We shot it in one day.  We wanted the finshed product to be in slowmo, so we had to speed up the audio and I had to lip sync along, which was quite tricky, but I love the finished result.

How was the recording and writing process?

I worked with Paul Aiden on rearranging a song I’d already written.  For recording, we figured out the guitar part, sang it through a couple of times then recorded in the vocals.  Then we came up with some backing vocals. Recorded them in and that was basically it.

What role does the UK play in your music?

I was brought up in Guildford and I’ve always lived here.  I went to a local primary school for boys and got into the choir at Guildford Cathedral.  From there, I grew up surrounded by music.  Also I’ve taken a lot of inspiration from UK artists such as Sam Smith and Adele.

After the major reception your music has been getting – do you feel any pressure as you were working on a new single or rather the opposite?

Yeah, I do feel a bit of pressure to make more music that people want to listen to.  I feel like I need to have at least  the same success and ideally better than the previous song, so that creates pressure too.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes.  I’m releasing new music every month alternating original songs and covers.  I’ve just released a Prince cover and I’m working with a variety of different co writers for my next single.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Yes, my next single will be out in mid September.  It’s called “Hiding Away” and is a co-write with Jonathan Quarmby, who wrote James Arthur’s “Safe Inside”.

Any plans to hit the road?

I wish.  It’s difficult with Covid.  I don’t think it’ll be possible anytime soon but I’m going to be doing some live streams on Instagram and with each new single I do a live stream through @livefrom.events.  I’ve got one coming up on September 4th through @livefrom.events with a couple of other artists too.

What else is happening next in Tom King’ world?

I’m just getting on with life.  I’m doing Keto right now and discovering loads of new recipes so I can still eat cake!
