katie MAC Walks Us Through Her Writing Process

My writing and recording process really varies depending on the song, but it’s always a labor of love. I like to be extremely involved from the idea to the finished product, making sure I have my hands on the production, the arrangement, the visuals, and pretty much everything else. I love to collaborate, but I am usually pretty set on what I want to say when it comes to writing. The ideas normally come from my experiences and relationships, and then I try to mold the song and production around that story.

In the case of Self Sabotage, my newest single, the idea came from a conversation I had with a friend. We were talking about life, careers, pretty much just everything under the sun. I was in the middle of a situation that felt very familiar, and that I knew wasn’t going to end well. My friend paused and said, “I feel like you’re doing the self-sabotaging thing again”. I had a session later that night with dear collaborators, Will McBeath and Sara Davis and I was explaining to them how that phrase really hit me- it felt very real. We spent the next few hours crafting the lyrics and melody, and then laid down what we call a “scratch” vocal that ended up being a big part of the final production!

When it comes time to finish up production of a song, I normally like to sit with a producer and discuss the arrangement, sound design, and vocal delivery. In this case, we actually changed a huge bit of the instrumentation- we started with a piano/synth vibe and then ended with a much more future-pop sounding track. Luckily, I work with amazing people who have no problem with me being involved in production so in this case, Will and I went back and forth quite a bit before settling on “the thing” for the track. For vocals, I did a lot of freestyle adlibs and harmonies which is basically where they let me go in the booth and just sing what feels natural. Ultimately, I felt like we really captured the story of the song in our production and I can’t wait for people to hear it!
