Hi Tonee, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
I’ve been great, I hope you have been good as well!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Oh Wow”?
“Oh Wow” came together as a summer anthem, and that was the goal from the start. I wrote the hook to the beat intentionally trying to make something short, to the point, catchy, and fun!
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
No ‘event’ inspired me to write the song, but just the excitement in the first summer of the decade. I had a desire to make a song that anyone could play at any party, getting everyone to turn up immediately.
Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?
We were planning on doing a music video in Miami during the beginning of summer, but unfortunately with the conditions caused by COVID-19, we weren’t able to. Hopefully in the near future we will be able to reschedule it.
How was the recording and writing process?
I wrote the song myself, which I do with all my songs. I don’t have a set process for writing lyrics. Whenever I write, it’s just a vibe I catch. It usually takes around 10 minutes to write a song when I’m in my mode. As for recording, I co-engineer with my engineer Jason Cummings. We have great chemistry and a speedy work ethic, so we can get out 2-3 songs in a 5 hour session. I knew what I wanted “Oh Wow” to sound like, so it was a quick process to record.
What was it like to work with Zay Hilfiger and how did that relationship develop?
My experience with Zay was dope, because he’s easy to work with, hard working, a great artist, as well as a humble person. We met through our mutual friend Susanna Paliotta, and instantly connected. We both had interest in each other’s music, so we figured we should collaborate on a song.
How much did he get to influence the song?
The song was already written and recorded when I sent it to Zay, so he just sent back the finished track after he layed his verse down in the studio.
Do you tend to take a different approach when collaborating with someone else rather than working on your own?
I create all songs, verses, and hooks the same way no matter if I’m the only artist on the track or not. I always put 100% effort, thought, and creativity into my creations. I make sure everything is always perfect, no matter what role I have on a track.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
I’m always working on new music daily, whether it’s beats, lyrics, etc. In 2020, I’ve been consistently dropping a new song every month, and I’m going to continue that. I’ve also recently released a music video for my song “Jefe”, which is my best video yet! It’s very cinematic, make sure you check it out!
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
My next release is called “Back Up”, written, produced, and co-engineered by me. The theme of the song is a hard, New York drill rap. It will be released on the 28th of August. I also have a song coming out on September 25th called “Friends”, which is a R&B record.
Any plans to hit the road?
I definitely want to hit the road, but I’m not sure when it will be. The sooner the better, but with the conditions of coronavirus it’s very limited as of right now.
What else is happening next in Tonee Marino’s world?
You can expect more music every month and more music videos as well! Also, be ready to see me starring in upcoming episodes of “Next Big Thing” on Amazon prime this September!
