The intriguing and much buzzed about project Pieces of a Woman-which has just landed a coveted showcase spot at the renowned Venice Film Festival-now has a new reason to call in the balloons and streamers: Legendary film director Martin Scorsese has just joined the Woman team as an executive producer. For those of you keeping score, this is the cinematic equivalent of having Babe Ruth pinch hit for an up and coming farm team or Roy Thomas being announced as writing your latest DC Golden Age revival comic book. In simpler terms with absolutely no pontification – This is a huge development for a small and respected art house film.
The auteur will be joining a strong team which consists of Pieces of a Woman director Kornel Mundruczo (White God, Jupiter’s Moon) in his English language debut film as well as an insanely talented cast which includes the likes of Vanessa Kirby (The Crown, Mission: Impossible-Fallout), Shia LaBeouf (Honey Boy, The Peanut Butter Falcon), Ellen Burstyn (The Last Picture Show, Requiem for a Dream) and Molly Parker (House of Cards, Deadwood: The Movie). The story centers around a married couple (Kirby and LaBeouf) in Boston whose lives are upturned when their proposed idyllic home birth goes irrevocably wrong, leaving their midwife (Parker) to face charges of criminal negligence. The story hits home in particular for director Mundruczo and Woman’s screenwriter Kata Weber, who is also the director’s significant other: Pieces of a Woman is based off of their own painful experience.
Announcing his role as an executive producer on the film, Mr. Scorsese stated that “Pieces of a Woman for me was a deep and uniquely moving experience. I was emotionally invested in it from the first scene, and the experience only intensified as I watched, spellbound by the filmmaking and the work of a splendid cast that includes my old colleague Ellen Burstyn (Ye Olde Writer’s Note: Ms. Burstyn and Mr. Scorsese worked together in the classic film, Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore). You feel as if you’ve been dropped into the vortex of a family crisis and moral conflict with all its nuances, drawn out with care and compassion but without judgement…It’s lucky to see a movie that takes you by surprise. It’s a privilege to help it find the wide audience it deserves.”
The film is set to debut in competition at the Venice Film Festival prior to a star-studded screening in “The Big Smoke” (also known as Toronto).
