INTERVIEW: The Late Eddie Money’s Son Dez Money Talks New Single, Album + More

Hi Dez, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Thank you for having me! I’ve been keeping busy working on new music and preparing to release the Deluxe Edition of my latest album, Blue. Excited to release the 2 new songs, “Fly” and “I’ll Be There For You”.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Fly”?

“Fly” is a song about chasing your dreams and becoming everything you want to be. Even though we all go through hard times, it’s how we persevere that defines who we are.

       “Just wait and see

       What we could be

       All that we’re made of

       All that we’re made of

       This is our fate

       (Hey)

       Just keep believing

       Just keep believing

       We’ll fly away”

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I wrote this song when my dad was sick in the hospital. My dad’s the reason why I love music so much. He played every show until he couldn’t play anymore. Even when he was sick with cancer, he was still going out there and putting on some of his best perormances. He gave everything he could give to music. That’s why I do what I do. I learned so much from him and playing in his band meant the world to me so this song’s for him.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

The filming process for “Fly” was more of a hands on experience for me which was cool. This is the first music video I directed and produced and I really enjoyed it.

The single comes off your album Blue. What made you want to release a new version of this album?

This is the Deluxe Edition of Blue that I am releasing through Universal. The two new songs were important to add onto the album because they meant a lot to me and sonically I think they make the album more complete. I wrote these songs when I was going through a lot and I know that there’s people all over the world that are going through it too so hopefully they can resonate with the music and it brings them joy.

How was the recording and writing process?

I write and produce all of my songs. A lot of it is recorded in my room. For “Fly” I started off playing on the acoustic guitar before writing the melody and lyrics. It actually was an acoustic song at first but I later went back and tracked all the other instruments. I play the drums, bass, piano, and guitar in all of my songs. I wanted this song to sound big and powerful so I also added live strings to take it to another level.

When writing these two new songs for the album, did you try to stick to the sound from the original album or go in a different direction?

When I’m writing songs I just do whatever is best for the song. I think each song calls for its own recipe. It’s essential for every artist to discover their own sound and when people listen to my music they’re hearing my sound and entering my world.

How would you say your upbringing has influenced your writing?

I come from a musical family so my life has always been surrounded by music. Some of my earliest memories from when I was a kid was playing the drums to my dad’s songs. All my life I’ve strived to be a true artist like my dad was. Music has always been my life and writing songs is how I tell my story.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

All of my songs are about my life experiences. I’m happy to be able to make songs for a living and I feel like I owe everything to music. I hope when people listen to my songs they understand how much music means to me.

What else is happening next in Dez Money’s world?

More music on the way. Stay tuned!
