Can Kadda Sheekoff Break into Africa Without Changing Who He Is?

How the former college party promoter took a calculated risk to become Haiti’s next star.

Born Gregory Pierre in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Kadda Sheekoff grew up with strong examples of entrepreneurship in his life. His mother owned a small business, and his father, a painter, Aside from a short stint in the choir at his primary school in Haiti, Kadda Sheekoff had no musical background to speak of. At 16, inspired by distant maternal relatives in Haiti, he moved from Haiti to New York to prepare for college, and, once at school, he studied Computer Tech.

Kadda Sheekoff received some backlash from some of his fans when he posted the artwork for the single “My Beautiful Africa” some of his fan was not happy about the title because his Haitian, however he talked to Terry Carter from Buzzfeed and said “I’m black, and all Black people are African, just because I want to talk about Africa on my song, so my haitian people got mad. But if the really knows the story of Haiti i don’t think they will act like that, us Haitian we are mostly the descendants of enslaved Africans brought to the island by Spain and France to work on plantations. So whether they like it or not, I’m dropping my f*** song.

Kadda Sheekoff may not be the biggest name in the African pop landscape yet, but he certainly has a big following. It’s been nearly a decade in the making; he’s been giving us bops and body since his last single All My Life. Kadda Sheekoff’s emergence through social media, rather than conventional music industry channels, helped him connect with younger fans who had different expectations about music, stardom, and identity.
