INTERVIEW: jaye

Hi jaye, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hey, I am honoured to be here! Things have been a roller coaster lately, but I’m more motivated than ever!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “ADHD”?

ADHD is an abbreviation which stands for Attention, Depression, Hit and Dip. These were the phases I had gone through whilst based in London. I was constantly seeking attention, but grew exhausted and depressed. I fell to my vices and hit a big wall in my life. Returning back to my hometown Singapore, and meeting the girl of my dreams helped me dip out of that dark place.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Absolutely! I remember watching the movie Bohemian Rhapsody and left the theatre inspired. Freddy Mercury reminded me of how being different is not a bad thing. I have always felt the pressure of conforming to society and that push was all I needed to take my solo music career seriously and believe that I could make it internationally.

Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

Yes, I am very excited about this one. It is going to be a choose your adventure type music video, where the viewer gets to dictate where the main character goes. Like Netflix’s Bandersnatch. As a bonus, there will also be an instagram filter 2d runner type game where you blink your eyes to make the character shoot lasers at oncoming monsters.

How was the recording and writing process?

My producer and I spent 1 day writing and 1 day recording. Things flowed naturally as I had a strong vision in mind, which was to create a 4 in 1 song akin to Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody.

What role does Singapore play in your music?

Honestly, being a creative mind in Singapore is difficult. I have been faced with many challenges and oppression with my ideas, which in turn have created many songs that I’ve written.

With the major reception your previous single got – did you feel any pressure when putting this song together or rather the opposite?

Well no, as ADHD was written way before any of my already released singles. There was 0 pressure and 100% pleasure!

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Hell yes. You can expect material for at least the next two years.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Mark your calendars for Halloween, as I will have a surprise for you.

Any plans to hit the road?

Yes, but perhaps a virtual tour.

What else is happening next in jaye’s world?

Working on fresh and new creative ways to experience my music.
