BREAKING: The Television Academy has announced this morning their nominations for outstanding work done in the television medium. Unlike previous nomination announcements for the prestigious awards, this one was done via virtual technology courtesy of a global pandemic. Hosting this announcement was the always resplendent Leslie Jones who turned over actual nomination announcements in the primetime categories to Laverne Cox, Tatiana Maslany and Josh Gad (whose name I always want to spell with an “l” as in “Josh Glad.” Ho-hum, digressions.). They were joined by Television Academy chairman/CEO Frank Scherma.
The competition, pandemic or no, was tight and formidable this year, with a record busting 767 programs in contention in over 100 categories for the coveted golden Emmy. Submissions increased this year by an impressive 15 percent over 2019.

Some quick takeaways: This writer is happy to see some love bestowed upon the Netflix show Stranger Things (Outstanding Drama Series) as well as two other faves in the same Outstanding Drama category, Succession and The Handmaid’s Tale.
On the Outstanding Comedy Series side of things, viewers will be hard pressed to find a better show than The Kominsky Method (Alan Arkin and Michael Douglas in a painfully funny best), and this nomination almost makes me forgive a second season that was waaaay too truncated.
Don Cheadle (Outstanding Lead Actor In a Comedy Series) getting some deserved attention too, for the stellar work he’s put in Black Monday is nice to see, and it’s always a happy day when the incomparable Jason Bateman (Outstanding Lead Actor In a Drama Series; Ozark) gets a little award love.
The winners for this year’s Emmy’s will be announced on September 20 live on ABC and will be hosted this year by Mr. Jimmy Kimmel.
