Hi Andre, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
I’ve been keeping well! Staying focused and busy during these crazy times.
Can you talk to us more about your latest EP “Short Term”?
“Short Term” is an R&B/Soul EP that I wrote, produced, recorded, and did vocals on. It’s a simplistic, experimental, calm and collective piece.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write the songs?
Music has always been a part of my life and I wanted to use my God-given gifts. For this EP, I wanted things to be simplistic and experimental. Something to soothe the mind. It’s basically pieces of reality expressed through song.
How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
Amazing, challenging, and exhilarating. I had a blast filming the video and very happy with how it turned out. My entire team behind the video was exceptional. At times, it was very challenging, but we all stayed focused and got the job done.
Why name the EP “Short Term”?
I named the EP “Short Term” because the whole EP is short and spicy. I wanted to also emphasize that these experiences that I’m going through are only short term.
How was the recording and writing process?
It was very cool. Usually, artists write and record at major recording studios, but I went a different route. I actually created a professional home recording studio and wrote and recorded everything myself. This gave me more freedom and time.
What role does Canada play in your music?
Canada plays a big role in my music. First, because I’m an African Canadian. Second, because all my experiences that I went through and incorporated in my music originated in Canada. I love Canada and I’m a proud Canadian.
What aspect of love and identity did you get to explore on this EP?
My personal struggles with finding true love and my personal struggles with finding my true identity is definitely fused into everything. We all struggle with the subject and I believe it’s necessary to share my story.
Was it easy for you to open up and become this vulnerable?
Yes and no. I’m also an actor so being vulnerable is essential. But when something is so meaningful and personal to you, it’s very hard to express that with the world. There’s so many people dealing with so many different things and I just want people to know they’re not alone.
Where else did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
The songs and lyrics came from my personal experiences and prayers I’ve had. A lot of what you’re hearing are my personal prayers.
What else is happening next in Andre Colquhoun’s world?
Lots of music, film, and TV! I’m grateful for being able to do what I love and I’m constantly excited.
