3 Reasons Why the Holidays are an Excellent Time to Look at Assisted Living Communities for the Elderly

In many families, the holidays are about the only time of the year that the entire family gets together. If this is true of your family, you may expect to see your elderly parents for the first time in a year. When you do, you will likely notice changes in their health and their abilities. It may begin to concern you that your elderly parents need senior care. An assisted living community may be appropriate.

If you need to find a retirement community for a loved one, the holidays may be the best time to begin looking. What follows are three reasons why you should take the opportunity during the holidays to tour a couple of assisted living facilities.

The holidays feature family activities

Assisted living homes usually arrange for family activities during the holidays. If you decide to visit at this time, you will get to meet the family members of residents, and you’ll be able to talk to them about how well their loved ones like living there. If they have complaints, you’ll hear about them.

The holidays put people in a good mood

If the elderly person in your life has been hesitant about moving into an assisted living home, they may be more open to the idea during the holidays. They are likely to be in a cheerful mood and to view the choice of moving into an assisted living home more favorably.

The homes you visit may have more vacancies

People tend to see their elderly family members for the first time in a while during the holidays. They see that they’ve grown older and may now benefit from skilled help and begin considering assisted living. It takes them a couple of months to make up their minds, talk to their loved ones, and finally decide to tour a home or two.

For this reason, January tends to be the busiest month of the year for these homes and communities. If you decide to visit before January, perhaps in November or December, you won’t have to deal with crowds. You may even be offered a discount to sign up during one of these months.

The holidays can be an excellent time to make a decision about assisted living for a loved one. The entire family is likely to be around to discuss how it is to be done. Each relative gathered there could research a different facility, and everyone could come to a well-thought-out determination about which way to go.

Unfortunately, this may be a difficult conversation, however as our loved ones advance in life, these conversations, including those about estate planning, living wills, etc. can be difficult, but are vital.

So, if you have a loved one who may need to move to an assisted living facility soon, the holidays can be the best time to make the change.
