Hi Mike, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hello! Thank you for having me!! Trying to be as positive as possible during these uncertain times.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Believe It”?
Believe It was an idea I’d been kicking around for a while, there were a couple of different versions, but nothing kept my interest until it turned into what it is now, and to be honest, I can’t quite recall how that happened. Tim and I really went in on rehearsing it, he crushed it on the recording! I LOVE work on this song!!
Did any event, in particular, inspire you to write this song?
I think the inspiration for this one was to just finish it already! I’d goofed off with it for so long and wanted it behind me. That kinda happens with ideas that stick, they sort of queue up in my mind, happily annoying me until they’re out.
How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
We haven’t filmed a video for it yet, but soon.
The single comes off your new EP Art Flakey – what’s the story behind the title?
We called it Art Flakey because the beat Tim came up reminded us of Art Blakey, and it was we called it to jam it.
How was the recording and writing process?
It was awesome! Chris Watson suggested I reach out to him, he responded quickly and we booked time. Tim and I were prepared and Sam is extremely quick and proficiant at what he does. He’s full of great ideas and just gets ‘it’. We got it all done in 5 days.
What was it like to work with Sam Cohen and how did that relationship develop?
The music was pretty much all written before we went in but Sam played bass on Silver and Gold, i was showing him what I was doing and he simplified it and made it so much better! He has great ears and knows how to shape sound.
What role does Brooklyn play in your music?
Everything! I just reached my 14th year here and I still love it.
Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
The first line of the song was the first thing i said when i was practicing the melody and it made me laugh and i went with it.
Any plans to hit the road?
I wish we had plans to hit the road!
What else is happening next in Imaginary Tricks’ world?
We all really miss being able to get into a room and play. What’s next is sweet sweet rehearsals…..
