INTERVIEW: Aime Simone

Hi Aime, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’ve been alright. Focused, god-like.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Strange Inside”?

It’s a grungy, trappy song written during lockdown, and it’s drawing a parallel between feeling cabin fever in a room and anxious inside your chest, striving for air.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

The pandemic and my general anxiety.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

Put a blanket on floor, that was black and velvety. I just grabbed my guitar and started to play the song. I don’t like to think too much about the scenario of a video, I just like when in the end it looks both rough and luxurious.

The single comes off your new album Say Yes, Say No – what’s the story behind the title?

I heard from some Shaman that life is a series of yes and no, it’s about polarities- positive, negative, love, fear, darkness, light. My one year old daughter, whatever you tell her, she says yes or no. It holds a truth that is interesting to make art out of.

How was the recording and writing process?

Flowing. It took three months. Just improvised songs and then like a sculptor, carved them into something detailed and precious, channelling personal experience and universal ones.

How has the lockdown and our current situation has influenced your music?

I think more than ever while making this album I was thinking of the live shows that I was missing, human connection. I really wrote it with the idea in mind that it would be amazing to play those songs and sing those words, dance over those beats once it’s all over and the lockdown is lifted.

As someone who tends to play with different styles – how do you go on balancing the genres and influences together?

I don’t really think about it, I try to create what I love to listen to and sing, and it happens that at my roots I am a songwriter, born in the 90s and very influenced by that era of guitar music, and I have always loved the aggression of a trap beat. It has the same energy as punk, just the modern translation.

What aspect of your own personal life did you get to explore on this record?

I think my path of healing, trying to heal.

Where else did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

It’s really about love and forgiveness and healing. I really like lexical fields of divinity, heaven, hell, angels, diamonds, flames, there’s a part of mythology and romantic poetry.

What else is happening next in Aime Simone’s world?

A documentary, a book gathering photos and journal entries from over the years, hopefully shows, and I have already started writing the next album.
