INTERVIEW: Skrizzly Adams

Hi Skrizzly, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Doing great, can’t complain!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Too Close To Fire”?

I’m super excited about the release of my upcoming single “Too Close to Fire” it’s the debut single off my upcoming 2nd album and is probably my favorite song of mine thus far.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

The title “Too Close to Fire” came first from conversation with a friend where I said someone I know got “too close to fire”. I wrote the hook and verse melodies around that title, then wrote the lyrics for the verses inspired by a relationship I was in at the time.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

Because of quarantine at the time I was stuck in NJ while the video was filmed in Nashville, but from everyone I communicated with on set the filming went smoothly and turned out to be a big success.

How was the recording and writing process? What was it like to work with Brent Kolatalo and Ken Lewis? How did those relationships develop?

I’ve been close with Ken and Brent for years now. They’re family; we all make a ton of music together and are constantly collaborating. They did a lot of producing on my debut album and played a crucial role in helping develop my sound. I feel like with Too Close to Fire being the first single off this new project, it was easier than ever and we felt more open to try new things and push my sound further.

How much did they get to influence the song?

I produced a rough of the song last fall that was honestly very different. It was more acoustic based and smooth and beautiful. When I passed it off to Ken and Brent they totally flipped the record in a way I could have never imagined, making it more electric and energetic. I was instantly thrilled with the results when I heard their first version.

With such a large audience backing you up – how does this influence your approach to music?

I think I’m very lucky in that I believe I know my audience pretty well. I always consider what is going to make a difference and positive impact in the world of my listeners when writing a song. I like to be inspired by my life experiences, but always try to write it in a way that will leave a strong impression on my listeners.

Do you feel any pressure when you are putting new material together or rather the opposite?

I love putting out new material. It’s one of the greatest thrills of my life. If I could release a song every week I would.

What role does New Jersey play in your music?

I feel just like any artist I’m a product of my surroundings; so the vibes and attitudes of the garden state definitely shine through in my music and lyrics.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new album? If so, any tentative release date or title in mind?

Yup new album coming next Spring. Expect a constant streams of singles until then

What else is happening next in Skrizzly Adams’ world?

My birthday is the day after the single release, should be a great weekend!
