Hi Tommy, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hey VENTS, I’ve been well! Thanks for asking. My heart is hurting for the state of America and the whole globe. We as humans deserve better and should be taking better care of each other and the planet. If we don’t speak up and exercise the 1st Amendment, hateful cancers like systemic racism, homophobia, transphobia, and many more oppressive mentalities, will be allowed to continue on.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Blessing In Disguise”?

I came up with the idea for the song while I was messing around on the piano. I knew that I wanted to write a song that described how I’ve felt many times in my life. When things get dark, you pray to god that things will turn out ok. I wanted to capture that feeling in a song. So I took the concept and music to my co-writer Austen Butler, and we wrote the whole song in like two hours. It all just flowed out. Then I tracked the piano for it, and finally, my talented friend and producer Elliot Polokoff produced and mixed it!

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I grew up as a pastor’s kid so coming out was always like this scary thing that I knew I was going to have to do eventually. I was also made fun of in high school because I was new and kids assumed, I was gay before I was ready to come out. It was really painful and hard to know people were making up rumors and talking about me. Anyways, I think this song was just a culmination. It’s me singing to myself while I’m going through it, hoping that everything turns out to be okay in the end.

Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

Yes, working on multiple music videos right now actually. I have lots of new visual content coming this summer.

How was the recording and writing process?

It was a lot of fun! It was totally one of those magical times writing a song where it all just comes flowing out. I think I’ve been wanting to tell this story and write this song for a while now. Recording it was challenging but so fun. It was the first song we finished for my new ep coming in July!

What role does Sacramento play in your music?

I think beyond music, Sacramento really raised me to be the person that I am today. Sac is very chill and laid back compared to other big cities in California which I have come to appreciate. It’s just far enough away but also close enough that I can travel quickly to SF or LA whenever I need to.

How does your upbringing influence your writing?

My parents had great taste in music and I feel like that influenced me so much. They were responsible for showing me acts like Fleetwood Mac, Mamas and The Papas, Neil Diamond, Shania Twain, Elton John, Mariah Carey, The Beatles, Cher, Whitney Houston, Prince, Michael Jackson, Dolly Parton and so many more amazing legendary artists. They all have had their own unique influence on me.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yeah, I just finished the last song for a new four song EP coming mid-summer!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

The tentative release is late July and the title of the EP is going to be called ‘star crossed’!!

What else is happening next in Tommy Boi’s world?

Outside of preparing for new music coming out soon, I’ve also been going downtown on the weekends and peacefully protesting for Black Lives Matter. It has been the most beautiful thing to be a part of. We are so strong and powerful when we unite together as a people. It was so powerful to see people of all backgrounds coming together to protest for justice, equality and systemic change.
