INTERVIEW: Jamie-Lee Dimes

Hi Jamie-Lee, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hey VENTS! I’ve been pretty focused lately on hibernation in my Los Angeles apartment. Thanks for asking!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Virginia”?

My latest song “Virginia” is a political love letter to America. It’s a plea to end the racism, discrimination, and hatred that we see so frequently. The world is watching and its time for equality everywhere.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

The unite the right rallies that took place in Charlottesville, Virginia in 2017 inspired “Virginia.” This song is a statement song to stand with those who don’t have a voice. I hope it continues to fuel the much-needed discussions we’re having about racism and discrimination.

Was this always intended to be a love letter to America or did it evolve into this?

I think, with any love letter, you don’t plan it. It’s just an outpouring of emotion. With the unite the right rallies in 2017 and the current state of events in this country, I feel emotional to talk about it.

How was the recording and writing process?

I recorded the song in Australia at Restless Noise Studios. Me and everyone I worked with had all listened to blues music growing up, so I had some friends help me bring “Virginia” it to life with guitars and slides, bass and drums, and I improvised a lot of the end vocals.

What role does Australia play in your music?

My security is Australia, so it helped me get on my feet and regain the energy I needed to tackle the life of living overseas on the other side of the world.

How has Cat Power and PJ Harvey influenced your writing?

I love these two women; they are just so grounded in their power. They are so comfortable being in their masculine energy, and as songwriters I think they are so talented.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes! I have a whole album of new material. It’s just a matter of timing with the current state of affairs in the world – it’s all a bit up in the air.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Hopefully later in the year of early 2021, depending on a few things. I have a name for the album already, but I don’t want to give the game away just yet. Stay tuned!

Any plans to hit the road?

I hope so! It’s all a little too up in the air for me to get my head around at the moment, but in a few months I’ll be planning some shows. I came over here from Australia to play SXSW, play a few headline shows, and tour before it was all cancelled, but as soon as I can I will be touring America!

What else is happening next in Jamie Lee Dimes’ world?

I just started dancing again and getting into film. I will go into pre-production on some more music soon as well while I get ready to release my current album. I’m always writing!
