How Is Hemp A Great Construction Material?

Today’s energy-saving environmental criteria stress the need for using plant-based construction materials. There has been a massive development in the applications of natural material for green building.

Among all the natural construction fibers, hemp concrete is the most promising and energy-efficient. It not only creates a positive balance in the climate change indicator, but it also has a positive impact on health.

If you are still unsure about the credibility of hemp material over the synthetic ones, you have come to the right place. We’ll tell you how hempcrete is a better choice as compared to the other building materials.

Hemp- An Environment-Friendly Way For Clean Living

Buildings made from synthetic materials can pose a risk to your health. You might be aware of the fact that industries produce a large amount of carbon emissions during the manufacture of synthetic construction materials. Not only it destroys the indoor air quality, but it also adds harmful contaminants into the environment.

But, hempcrete is a sustainable construction material that produces less carbon emissions. Hempcrete is made by combining hemp hurd, binders, and water to produce a slurry used for roofs, walls, and floors. It is an organic material, which is water-proof, pest-resistant, fire-proof, and recyclable.

Also, it does a wonderful job of regulating the temperature and humidity of the home. As it is breathable, it absorbs carbon dioxide. As it is lightweight, it can be used as an alternative to traditional construction materials.

Hempcrete And Actual Concrete

One thing that differentiates hemp concrete from concrete is its density. As it is 15% as dense as concrete, the hempcrete blocks float on water. Thus, it is recommended to use hemp concrete with a frame supporting.

Also, a great amount of air trapped inside the hemp concrete makes it a good insulation material. While it is breathable, it is an incredibly suitable insulator for heat, as well as noise. Furthermore, cement and concrete limit the absorption of precipitation, increasing the temperature, and pausing the growth of the land. It emits a lot of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

However, as hemp concrete is porous, it absorbs carbon dioxide and moisture. In fact, it is three times more resistant than concrete. It has low density, which protects it from cracking under the movement. This is the reason why hempcrete buildings are earthquake-resistant.

Hemp Concrete and Brick

A brick is made of concrete, sand, and clay-bearing soil. From fly ask bricks, hollow bricks, engineering bricks to common mud bricks, you can find a variety of bricks. One significant reason why brick is the most commonly used construction material is its uniform shape and size.

However, bricks are not mold-resistant. Instead, they absorb water, causing dampness of the wall and resulting in insects, mites, and molds. If you use hemp concrete bricks, there are many advantages.

Though hemp is lightweight, it is breathable, energy-efficient, and strong. It is water-resistant and gets stronger after time.

Like brick, other popular construction materials include rammed earth, adobe, straw bale, etc. However, with adobe, you have to use additional insulation material. Similarly, the straw bale is not a good water-resistant; it might expand if exposed to water.

Thus, hempcrete is a better choice over other construction materials. Hopefully, now you are confident enough to go with hemp concrete for building your home.
