Filmfare Awards – What You Need To Know

If you are a fan of Hindi films, you are probably familiar with the Filmfare Award. There are a number of awards in five categories handed out each year. These awards range from Best Actor to Critics Best Film to Best Choreography. As a fan of Hindi films, it is likely that you tune into the Filmfare Award show annually. If not, you may be interested in learning more about these awards and the people who have received them.

Best Film

Each year, the Filmfare magazine creates a list of nominees for the Best Film Award. The nominees are decided by the magazine editor and staff. It is never easy to determine which nominee should take home the award. But, the Filmfare team does what is necessary to ensure the highest level of fairness across the table.

The first Filmfare Best Film Award was given to Bimal Roy Productions for its film “Do Bigha Zamin”. This was an easy decision for the Filmfare team because there were no other production companies nominated for the award.

In 1955, the award was given to R.K. Films for its film “Boot Polish”. The last Best Film Award to be handed out was in 2019. The award was given to “Gully Boy”.

Best Actor

The most popular Filmfare Award is Best Actor. This award is considered the “most prestigious” because it is always the highlight of the event. A single actor is chosen for this award. The first actor to ever win the Filmfare Best Actor Award was Dilip Kumar in 1954 for his role as Shankar in the film “Daag”.

Shankar was a poor sob who made money by selling handmade mud toys. Shankar lived with his mother, step-brother, sister-in-law, and niece. Living in poverty and not earning enough money to make ends meet, Shankar began drinking. The straw that broke the camels back with an argument between Shankar and his mother. This pushed Shankar to leave the home in search of a new life.

The film was very popular at the time and lucky for Kumar, there were no nominees. So, it was no big surprise when his name was called to receive the award.

In 1955, actor Bharat Bhushan received the Filmfare Best Actor Award for his role in Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. The last Filmfare Best Actor Award to be handed out in 2020. The award went to Ranveer Singh for his role in Gully Boy.

Best Actress

Another popular Filmfare Award is the Best Actress Award. This is a prestigious award that is given to a female who stars in a Hindi film. The first Filmfare Best Actress Award was given to Meena Kumari for her role “Gauri” in the film “Baiju Bawra”.

Kumari was also awarded the 1955 Filmfare Best Actress Award for her role “Lalita” in the film “Parineeta”. Kumari, an Indian actress, spent 33 years of her life performing in Indian films. She was highly known in India as “The Tragedy Queen”. In 1972, Kumari passed away at the age of 38. Her last role “Greeta” was in the Hindu film “Bhabhi Ki Chudiyan”.

In 1956, the award was given to Kamini Kaushal for her role “Biraj Chakravarty” in the film “Biraj Bahu”.

Other Awards

There is a short list of Filmfare Awards handed out each year. These awards include Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Male Debut, Best Female Debut, Best Lyricist, and others.

Several actors and actresses have received multiple Filmfare awards. These actors include Amrish Puri, Anil Kapoor, Abhishek Bachchan, Amitabh Bachchan, and Naseeruddin Shah. There have also been several actors who have been nominated multiple times for a Filmfare Award. These include Raaj Kumar, Feroz Khan, Amjad Khan, Akshay Kumar, and Naseeruddin Shah.


The Filmfare Award show airs on public television in the first quarter of each year. Each show offers a diverse audience with some of the top Hindu actors and actresses. The show features awards and live entertainment. If you are a Hindu film fan, you will definitely want to tune into the next Filmfare television broadcast. It is scheduled to be aired on Colors TV in 2021.
