The ground-up leaves from the Kratom tree have been used for thousands of years by those looking to enhance their lives, naturally.
Over time, this plant has experienced an ebb and flow of both disdain and tolerance by national and state governments throughout the world. This has resulted in the waffling of Kratom legality depending on where you point on the map.
This has obvious implications for anyone who might want to bring some Kratom with them to a concert or other live music event.
Because possession and distribution of Kratom is controlled or outright illegal in some places (both international and domestic), it’s important to mind your P’s and Q’s when traveling with it. To help with this effort, here are some things to keep in mind if you’re planning a trip and want to take some of your Kratom with you.
For Non-Air, Interstate Travel
There are only six US states in which Kratom is fully illegal. These states are:
- Rhode Island
However, there are a few municipalities that have passed local laws prohibiting the possession or sale of Kratom. These areas are:
- San Diego
- Sarasota County, Florida
- Union County, Mississippi
If you are traveling by car, bus, train, or other ground-based transportation, and you are going to or from a US location not listed above, you’re not going to have any problems.
For Air Travel (Domestic or International)
When flying with Kratom, there are a few things to remember. First, as a general rule, keep your Kratom in your checked bag, if possible. The reason for this is because if you have layovers in a place where Kratom isn’t allowed, keeping it in your checked bag will protect you from liability due to having it on your person.
Second, always do thorough research on the laws related to Kratom possession in the place you’re traveling to. While it may be legal to have Kratom where you depart, it may not be legal where you’re landing. So, know your laws!
Lastly, it’s a good idea to always travel with your Kratom in its original, unopened container. Doing so will eliminate concerns that it might be adulterated with some controlled substance.[A note about dealing with TSA/Airport Security: Don’t forget that TSA and airport security’s #1 priority is the safety of travelers. They are not police, and they are generally not interested in detecting herbal substances. That being said, by knowing the Kratom laws where you’re traveling to and from, you shouldn’t have any issues with TSA/security.]
When Traveling with Kratom, Protect Yourself with Knowledge
The best approach to preparing for travel with Kratom is to arm yourself with as much knowledge as possible. Stay current on the Kratom laws where you live, and use common sense when packing your Kratom.
The consequences of getting caught with Kratom where it is illegal can be serious. This is especially true in some foreign countries where possession of an illegal substance can result in immediate imprisonment (without due process, in some places).
So stay informed, stay safe, and Kratom on!
