5 Ways You Could Be Damaging Your Immune System

In life, we run into microscopic bacteria all the time; it’s all around us constantly – we just can’t see it. But the reason we don’t get sick constantly is simple: the immune system. The immune system is your body’s defense against illness and disease. Without a strong immune system, your body is open to attack from bacteria, viruses and bugs. A weak immune system also makes it less likely that you will be able to fight disease and infection effectively, if you do end up getting sick. Here are five ways you could be damaging your immune system:

Chronic Stress

Chronic stress has been linked to a wide range of diseases and health conditions, including gastrointestinal problems, neurological conditions and cardiovascular disease. Long-term stress can also weaken or impair the immune system. Learning to reduce and manage stress can help to prevent its negative effect on the immune system.

Inactivity

Lack of exercise and leading a sedentary lifestyle has been linked to obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and many other health problems. Inactivity can also reduce the effectiveness of your immune system, especially if you are not getting enough vitamin D. Vitamin D is essential for the immune system to function properly and is made by the body when your skin is exposed to sunlight.

Isolation

Social isolation and loneliness have also been linked to reduced immune function and an increase in the risk of many different diseases, including heart disease. Spending time with family, friends or social acquaintances benefits your physical and mental health, as well as your immune system.

Poor Diet

The immune system needs an adequate supply of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients in order to work properly. Highly processed foods and those containing large amounts of sugar and fat can rob your body of vital nutrients. Cutting down on junk food and increasing the amount of fresh fruit, vegetables, whole grains and high-quality protein, such as fish, chicken, eggs and pulses, in your diet helps to ensure your body has the right nutrients to keep you healthy. Stimulants

Stimulants, such as caffeine and energy drinks, can help you to stay focused and provide a short-term energy boost. However, excessive use of stimulants can have the opposite effect, leading to fatigue and brain fog. The immune system is a vital part of any body. It not only protects against sickness, but it also helps limit the negative effects of an illness if you do get sick. Chronic stress, inactivity, isolation, poor diet and stimulant use can all have a detrimental impact on immunity, making you more prone to illness.
