After leaving the Library, Robin went travelling in South America, and came back bewitched by bossa nova guitar playing. Songs came to him that combined bookish indie sensibilities, blissed-out samba grooves and his own Caribbean background. He’s joined by top Brazilian rhythm section Xande Oliveira (drums, percussion) and Klaus Stahr (double bass), together with Siân Herbert (flute, steel pan, melodica) and Claire Niesyto-Bame (backing vocals, percussion).
Sugarcane have been featured as a double-page spread in the Evening Standard and praised by The Line of Best Fit, Notion Magazine, and Aesthetic Magazine. They’ve been played by Tom Robinson on 6Music, featured three times on BBC Introducing in the West Midlands, selected for the BBC Introducing Mixtape and were long-listed for Glastonbury Emerging Acts 2019.
The euphoric new single Clear Blue Sky captures sunshine in a bottle, the perfect soundtrack
to the joyous, long summer months ahead. It welcomes back BAFTA award winning actress Antonia Thomas (Misfits, Lovesick, The Good Doctor) to feature. Antonia was also the featured vocalist on Sugarcane’s first single “One Specific Thing”, which has now notched up over 135K listens on Spotify. Of the single, Robin says:
“It’s about going on an adventure with your new love at the start of the summer. I love this song – Mr. Hudson penned it for our indie guitar band in the days of yore, before even the formation of the Library. I knew “Clear Blue Sky” had to have its time in the sun. Its lazy summery lyrics are a perfect match with Sugarcane’s tropical rhythms, and Antonia sings the hell out of it.”
The track was produced by Raphael Mann at Arco Barco Studios in Ramsgate.
