INTERVIEW: Toronto-based artist Erich Mrak

Can you talk to us more about you latest single, “Girls” ?

“Girls” was one of the last songs we produced for the album, and was Initially called “Boys”. The pop heavy sound on “Girls” led to a change in sound direction for the entire album.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song ?

“Girls” stems from a conversation I had with a friend of mine, who at the time was experiencing a recent heartbreak.

Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

There are! We have a live session of the song with my guitarist, BeatsBlayne set to release on July 14th on Instagram and socials. We also have a music video in the works as well for a release on a later date.

How was the recording, and writing process ?

“Girls” was recorded at Revolution Recording, Toronto. Initial production and writing for “Girls” began in July 2019 during a 3 day session. The song was written fairly quickly between myself and my producer, Phil Hotz, over the course of the sessions.

What role does Toronto play in your music ?

Toronto pushes me. It makes me work as hard as I can, and then keep working more.

How has Post Malone and The 1975 influenced your writing ?

I tend to lean more towards pop-production and I’ve found that both have harnessed that unique and intriguing ways.

Does the new single mean we can expect new material ? How’s that coming along ?

It does! All of the new material is coming along well. The album is done and we will be releasing new material every week, whether that is a new single or a new cover session with my guitarist, BeatsBlayne. Two weeks ago we released “Girls”, then last week we released a cover of “Riptide” by Vance Joy, and this coming week we will be releasing a cover of “Photograph” by Ed Sheeren.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

The title for the album that “Girls” is from is “Glimpse”. Release date is still TBA.

Any plans to hit the road ?

Not right now. Due to the current situation with COVID-19, my team and I have decided to not plan a tour but to instead release new material digitally once a week for the time being.

What else is happening next in Erich Mrak’s world ?

Music wise, I’m in the process of creating new covers, and working on an EP for late 2020, early 2021. Personally, I’m getting a basset hound.
