INTERVIEW: Neave Zaria

Hi Neave, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’ve been good thanks! Keeping well in lockdown although I’m missing the best things in life, like the gym!!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Never The Same”?

It’s the third song I’ve written with Chas, my producer. It’s got a retro soul feel to it with the horns and kind of a Motown rhythm section. I love it and have had a good response to it so far.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Yeah, I had a fall out with someone very close to me. They said some really hurtful things and it took a while to get over it. Were OK with each other now, but something’s missing and it’ll never be the same!

Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

Video has been shot on location in Surrey – it was really difficult as it was done during lockdown, but it’s come out great. It’ll be live on my YouTube Channel (NeaveZariaOfficial) from July 3rd!

How was the recording and writing process?

The recording process is normally the same for our songs. The instruments are put down first, so essentially we have a backing track and then the vocals are recorded. I’ll sing the song over and over until we get around half a dozen of good takes. We then pick the best parts and lay it down in the final take.

How would you say the whole transatlantic flight get to influence the writing on this song?

I watched a film on the plane – it was actually Amy, about Amy Winehouse. I’ve seen it before but there’s loads of great music on there and a part where they go through her lyrics in detail. It inspired me to write down a few lines and I had an idea for the song in my head. As soon as I got back, I gave it to Chas and he came up with the music.

What role does Guildford play in your music?

Not much at the moment everything’s shut! It’s a great town and has a good live music scene, but obviously not a lot is happening there at the moment, it’s difficult to see when it will return. Soon, I hope!

How has Nina Simone and Etta James influenced your writing?

I wouldn’t say they influenced my writing, but their vocal ranges and tone has always been an inspiration to me. I try and incorporate certain elements of their singing style into my own.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

We are currently working on songs and developing a style but it’s harder than it seems! It’s trial and error with songs but definitely expect a lot more from me.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

The next single will be called ‘Like Me’, its due out early in September.

Any plans to hit the road?

I do really, really want to travel with a backpack and a one-way flight. I got a taste for it a few years ago and there’s nothing I want more than to go and experience the world and see who I really am. Obviously money is the hard side of things, but hopefully one day I’ll get there.

What else is happening next in Neave Zaria’s world?

Nothing too exciting, apart from making music and excessive cleaning, my life is pretty normal! I think after lockdown though I’ll start to go out and let off some steam and get a bit crazy again!
