Lenny Kravitz, the Grammy-winning rock icon with international renown as a multi-hyphenate musician, songwriter, record producer, photographer, activist, designer, actor and philanthropist will pen “Let Love Rule: A Memoir” [October 6, 2020; 272 pp. with 16 pp. color photo insert; $29.99] that covers the first 25 years of his life for Henry Holt and Company. Kravitz’s co-author is biographer and songwriter David Ritz, and Kravitz will be narrating the audiobook version himself. Holt acquired North American, audio and first serial rights to the memoir. The book will be edited by Serena Jones, executive editor.
Said Lenny Kravitz, “I am pleased to announce the release of my book ‘Let Love Rule.’ Writing this memoir has been a beautiful and interesting experience taking me through the first 25 years of my life, from birth to release of my first album. That journey, full of adventure, was where I found myself and my voice. Through that experience, love was the force that paved the way and love became my message.”As a portrait of an artist as a young man, “Let Love Rule”—which takes its title from Kravitz’s first album—covers a vast canvas stretching from Manhattan’s Upper East Side, Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant, Los Angeles’ Baldwin Hills, Beverly Hills and finally France, England and Germany. It’s the story of a wildly creative kid who, despite tough struggles at school and extreme tension at home, finds salvation in music. In one lightning-fast chapter after another, we see him grow as a musician and ultimately a master songwriter, producer and performer. We also see Lenny’s spiritual growth—and the powerful way in which spirit informs his music.
The cast of characters is extraordinary: his father Sy, a high-powered news executive; his mother Roxie Roker, a television star; and Lisa Bonet, the young actress who becomes his muse. The central character, of course, is Lenny himself who, despite his great aspirational energy, turns down record deal after record deal, until he finds his true voice. The creation of that voice, the same voice that is able to declare “Let Love Rule” to an international audience, is the very heart of this story.
