Film fans have waited more than 30 years to see Tom Cruise return to the role of Maverick, so many were no doubt left disappointed when it was confirmed that the hugely-anticipated Top Gun sequel was being pushed back a few months.
While Top Gun: Maverick was expected to hit cinemas this summer, the film is now expected to take to the skies at Christmas – with its release set for December 23rd.
Merchandise moves forward
Despite the shift in the release date, it is interesting to note that the movie’s influence is already being felt in a few different ways. For example, merchandise linked to the movie has emerged in recent weeks, despite the fact that the story it relates to remains under wraps.
Military.com reports that several toys carrying the Top Gun: Maverick logo are now available to buy, with Matchbox products including an aircraft carrier and jet launchers featuring on sites such as Amazon and Walmart Online.
Furthermore, there has already been some discussion about other ways that the film could have an impact, including suggestions that it may well become a source of fashion inspiration.
An influence in other areas
In the middle of June, Bloomberg published an article which hinted that the film’s release could lead to growing interest in so-called pilot’s watches. The site went on to suggest that people should check out models such as the IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Top Gun, and the Bremont MBIII, if they are looking for one to buy.
The movie’s impact has been felt in the world of motorcycles too, with AutoEvolution and other sites reporting on a very special new bike created by Federal Moto. The FED-016 ‘Danger Zone’ is of course named after the iconic song associated with the original Top Gun, with representatives from the garage explaining how they were commissioned to create it by “an ‘80s kid”.
But while there is clear evidence that many people are already feeling excited about the launch of Top Gun: Maverick, what other products could see a surge in popularity as its release moves closer? While winter may not always be the ideal time for sunglasses, it would not be a huge surprise to see a growing appetite for so-called Aviators. The original Top Gun film from 1986 is a much-loved classic, yet it is still fairly remarkable to see how the sequel’s influence is already being felt – particularly when its release remains around six months away.
For many, Top Gun: Maverick may well prove to be a real Christmas treat and it will be fascinating to see if it also proves to be an inspiration on other areas as its release draws ever nearer.
