Hi Sophiegrophy, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
I’ve been pretty amazing.
Can you talk to us more about your single “Shake”?
Shake is the fun song in my Ep, it’s all about loosening up & have a great time. When we were working on BOLD we actually finished all the tracks & Shake was not even developed yet. Jia Lih who is my producer played a beat for me which I immediately loved because it was more on the fun, super hyped & not to serious side and I knew we needed it on the EP. It was different to the other tracks it had it’s own unique bounce & style.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Yes all the outings I’ve had such as going out with friends & long nights. I remember sometimes we would have birthday celebrations & the security will be knocking on the door about noise complaints haha, this actually inspired the second verse of Shake.
Any plans to release any sort of video?
Yes it’s actually something that’s in the works so thats definitely coming soon.
The single comes off your new EP BOLD – what’s the story behind the title?
The title BOLD basically explains the whole EP because each song is so different & I took a lot of risk exploring a lot of sounds. I didn’t want to chose a generic title I really wanted the title to illustrate each track of the EP.
How was the recording and writing process?
The writing process was easy but the recording was challenging because I’m such a perfectionist so I had to make sure my energy was right. There were some days where my energy wasn’t right so Jia Lih and I would record a track and you could just tell that my energy was projected to the track. We even had some times where we took a one week break just to have clearer ears.
What role does Australia play in your music?
Quite a lot I’ve spent my teenage & adult years so far in Australia & I have learnt a lot, each lessons are continuously being explored in my writing.
How would you say your particular upbringing influenced the writing on this album?
My upbringing has definitely influenced me a lot in regards to my writing process, I am very cautious of the things I put out because I’m aware of my words & how it can affect others so I make sure what I’m writing is authentic & empowering. I write so people can relate.
Do you tend to take a different approach when collaborating with someone else rather than working on your own?
Not at all I keep the same energy with both, I believe if you give 100 percent when it comes to your track you should put the same percentage when it comes to a collaboration because at the end of the day your efforts will be noticed.
Where else did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
Light & smell, certain light colours & smell brings back a lot of nostalgia that helps with that inspiration. The colour purple especially is one of the colour that really helps me with my writing process, it’s quiet weird.
Any plans to hit the road?
Yes, hopefully when everything becomes better.
What else is happening next in Sophiegrophy’s world?
More music, more visuals & more of everything 🙂
