INTERVIEW: Mighty Tortuga

Today we are pleased to team up with the great guys of Mighty Tortuga for the premiere of their new single “Soul Searching,” an upbeat song that will set you in the right mood, especially on our bleak days, with its great harmonies and infectious melodies.

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hey there! Thanks for having us! We have been well despite everything that’s been going on the past few months. Doing what we can to stay active!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Soul Searching”?

Yes! Our new single “Soul Searching” came out this past week. It was mixed by James Paul Wisner (Paramore, Dashboard Confessional, Underoath) and has elements of nostalgic emo and hints of modern indie pop. As for the lyrical content of the song, it’s a journey through the world of trust issues, all while trying to find your true self. To sum it up, it is about the idea that in the end, it doesn’t always work out, whatever it may be. While it may seem negative, it’s more so meant to be the moment where I take a look at myself and realize that I can do better.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

There was a moment while I was on a hike, where I originally took the photo for the single artwork actually, that I took a moment to look out and just think for a bit. The lyrics for the chorus came into my head at that moment. I always try to take experiences like these to self reflect, and that is essentially what the song is about. I spent a lot of my teenage years in a spot where I didnt want to be, so lately I’ve been working on self care and keeping myself healthy. This song is essentially a note to myself, where I can say “It’s all good, you are okay.”

How was the recording and writing process?

The recording process was done mostly by us in our basement. We have always taken pride in being a DIY band thus far so we can stay true to our creative process. The instrumental for this song was an original demo for our first record “Letting Go,” and we thought with the current situation we would bring it back to life. We added in the lyrics, re-tracked some guitars and we were happier with it than ever! To put the icing on the cake, we had James Paul Wisner mix since we admire his work immensely!

What role does Connecticut play in your music?

Connecticut is our home. We are always doing absolutely everything we can to bring light to our tiny state. We hosted a CT digital music festival during COVID that brought together ten bands from the CT local scene to give everyone a platform to show their talent and gain some exposure from anyone who came to watch a separate band. Not only do we love playing all around CT, but it’s also where most of our fans reside. The shows are incredible here and the scene is booming louder than ever. We highly recommend coming through to CT, and supporting the locals out here. So much good music!

What is it about the 90s that you find so fascinating?

MTV Cribs and Shaggy.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

The new single does not directly coincide with an upcoming release. However, we are about 95% done with our next record. COVID hit right in the middle of the recording process, so we got a bit set back on the release, but it can be expected this year! We are super excited to share these new songs and hope you will all enjoy them! We teamed up with Dominic Nastasi at Steadfast Studio in Naugatuck, CT to work with us on production, and the songs are HUGE. We couldn’t be happier about it all.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

We are shooting to have it out once the venues start opening back up hopefully in the fall-winter! The record is called “the gloom.”

What else is happening next in Mighty Tortuga’ world?

Besides “the gloom.” and its release, we will be launching a monthly video series called “Tortuga Tuesday” exclusively for our mailing list in the next few weeks! It will feature exclusive content, covers, sneak peeks of new tracks and much, much more! You can find all info about us over at www.MightyTortuga.com. We look forward to seeing you all soon! Stay safe!
