Hi Rayne, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hey! Thanks for having me! I’ve been pretty good, just staying inside and distracting myself from the world and throwing myself into my music right now.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Bored”?
Sure! ‘Bored’ is a song I wrote with Brian Howes and Jeff Dawson. It’s about an on and off relationship that keeps cycling around and repeating itself.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Most of my music is inspired by the world around me, whether it be something I see on TV, read in a book or article, or hear while I’m out. ‘Bored’ started off as a title, and then we built a story around that. I had been almost chronically bored for a week before the writing session and was going through a huge bout of writer’s block, so I used that as a kind of inspiration for how I wanted the song to sound and feel.
Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?
I’m planning to film a lyric video for the song!My first ever single “Do With That” needed a lyric video and It took me well over 70 hours to do, so I’ll definitely be using a different approach when it comes to this video. I never would have thought the video editing class I took in school would be so useful!
How was the recording and writing process?
It was fun! Jeff has an amazing studio space and is such a great guy. We have written a few songs together so I am quite comfortable with him. This was my first time working with Brian Howes so I was a bit nervous before meeting him, but he’s such a fun and talented guy. I brought a list of title ideas with me (Bored was my favourite) and he thought it could be a cool concept for a song. From there I kind of threw out the first line, “boy I’m over it” and we just started writing.
What was it like to work with Milli Beatz and how did that relationship develop?
My manager Tracey Singer is friends with Eric Spence ( Timbaland’s Uncle) who is with Bluestone/Anthem and she thought it would be a great pairing. I worked with Millibeatz on my previous release, ‘The Low’, he sent several tracks to pick from, and wrote a song over it. This was my first time top-lining and really enjoyed it. It was also great to be working with Troy Sampson, he’s had a lot of experience writing like that before! It was a challenge for me, but I had a lot of fun doing it and learned a lot.
How much did he get to influence the song?
Millli created a cool beat that inspired us to create a melody and write a story that we felt suited the vibe of the song.
What role does Vancouver play in your music?
I feel pretty fortunate to live in a city that has such a talented group of musicians and writers. It has given me the opportunity to find and create a sound of my own. My manager is from Vancouver as well!
Does the new single mean we can expect new material – how’s that coming along?
There’s a lot of stuff in the works right now that I’m super excited to share! I have a 6 song EP completed that I’m just waiting for the right time to release.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Not at the moment, but you can follow me on my socials to stay tuned on new releases 😉 (please don’t mine this shameless self plug) You can follow me on Instagram ( @raynemusic_ )Facebook ( Rayne Music ) and Twitter ( @raynemusic_ )
Any plans to hit the road?
With COVID going on I’d say definitely not right now, but hopefully in the future when things are safe again! I miss being on the stage! In the interim I will be creating songs to share with you on YouTube and continue to take part in as many online performances as I can.
What else is happening next in Rayne’s world?
Lots of writing! I’ve been co-writing for a lot of other artists recently and have been loving that. I’ll also be writing for myself and adding more and more songs to the “secret recordings” file on my phone.
