INTERVIEW: Dance Lessons

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi there! We’ve been well, all things considered. We’ve used a lot of unspent energy during the last few months towards making more music. Our third single will have been written, recorded, and produced during lockdown.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single?

‘New Job’ is about post-breakup or more generally how to distract oneself after any trauma rather than confronting the emotional fallout. Deflection gets a bad rep, but it can be surprisingly useful.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Initially, it was a general observation about the way many of us tend to handle the fallout of relationships or the aftermath of distressing events. But it was written right before Ann’s relationship came to an end, so it became a self-fulfilling prophecy.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

The video was shot in Los Angeles last month during the city-wide lockdown. A director we love, Sarah Chatfield (Lily Allen, Lykke Li & Snoh Aalegra), took on the challenge of filming something during the height of lockdown. There was no crew and she shot it entirely on an iPhone. It features real-life couple Gbari Gilliam and Shantel Urena, who choreographed and performed an amazing dance routine to the track. We couldn’t be happier with how it turned out and we’ve been mesmerized by the eerily deserted LA streets where it was shot.

How was the recording and writing process?

Ann wrote the skeleton of the song, then Tom and Nat fleshed out the music with bass and guitar, and Tom did the additional vocals. Once recorded, Ann then finished off the production and created an initial mix. We had the brilliant Andrew Maury (Lizzo, Kimbra, Shawn Mendes and Lewis Del Mar) mix and master the track.

What role does London play in your music?

London is home to us; the culture, the people, the everyday experiences – they all influence our sound and lyrics. Its musical and cultural diversity is a direct influence on our sound. Just sitting outside a local cafe or strolling through different parts of town, you’re faced with a mind-blowing array of lyrical themes. London is never silent. You always end up humming the last thing you hear passing that bar or hearing the radio blaring from a car out front. We’re all from different places – Ann is originally from Germany, Nat’s American and Tom’s a Brit but London is where we came together and to us, it’s the best place in the world for music makers and music fans.

Does the new single mean we can expect new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes! We’re looking to release our third single in August.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

As early as possible, but probably mid-August.

Any plans to hit the road?

Just as soon as Covid-19 allows us to! A big part of our music is the live dynamic, and we can’t wait to start bringing that energy to people in hot, sweaty rooms and on festival stages!

What else is happening next in Dance Lessons’ world?

We’ve got some stripped-down live sessions lined up and we’re collaborating with artists on remixes for a couple of tracks. The way we make music means that we are continuously writing rather than only working during defined periods in the year. We cannot wait to unleash ourselves into the world with live shows and making our performances an amazing experience for fans.
