Hi Marie, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hey! Thank you so much for having me. Very well thank you, although it’s far too hot for today’s outfit choice!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Blue Jumper”?
Well, I wrote blue jumper when I was 16 about a friend of mine that I felt very strongly towards. I wasn’t sure if it was a crush, or an infatuation, but at the time if felt like the end of the world! It turned out to just be a very loving friendship, calm down everybody, absolutely nothing ever happened! It was very innocent and quite sweet really, but I laugh about it now!
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
It’s super hard being a teenager, not that I can remember so far back, but everything feels so extreme, emotions are heightened, and you always convince yourself that things will never get better, when actually everything is fine, and theres always an end. I think this song was definitely written in the height of my teenage naivety.
Any plans to release any sort of video for the track or future tracks?
Yes 100%! I’m so excited to be able to film the music video. I have so many ideas on my notes that I’m running out of phone storage!
How was the recording and writing process?
The recording process was life changing. I was struggling to find my sound before lockdown, but after sleepless nights of storyboarding with my girlfriend and the help of producer Carey Willetts, we managed to create something that I feel really proud of. The writing process is something that I can barely remember, but I think i wrote blue jumper in just over ten minutes! As the years go on I’m getting much slower haha!
What was it like to work with Carey Willetts and how did that relationship develop?
Carey was actually my first ever co-writing session last year. I was absolutely petrified, but as soon as he opened the door I felt so comfortable. He’s the loviest man, and such an incredible producer, I just feel honoured to be working with him. The most important thing for me is to be working with people that I love and care about. I appreciate his talent of course, but what means more to me is the ongoing support and care that he’s shown over the past 12 months. That’s truly priceless.
How much did he get to influence the song?
Everything I do is always a group effort. No idea is ever a bad one. I know that I’m the artist, but without my support network I’d be a nobody! Carey has had a huge influence on my music along with Emily and Sam, my partners in crime!
How has the likes of Tracy Chapman and David Bowie influenced your writing?
I mean in terms of David Bowie my Dad is genuinely one of the biggest fans I know, so I was listening to him whether I liked it or not! Growing up listening to classic music would definitely have helped my songwriting, my parents are to thank for that.
Having played Glastonbury Fest – how did this experience actually influenced you as an artist? Has your approach to music or performance changed?
I think that Glastonbury gave me a lot more confidence in myself as a writer. To hear people cheering for you and your original material is an incredible feeling. I came away far more motivated and inspired than ever before.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Your guess is as good as mine! To be honest I’m not 100% sure right now, but what I do know is that many more songs are being written and recorded as we speak so fingers and toes crossed!
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
I don’t share all of my secrets…
What else is happening next in Marie White’ world?
Well in Marie White world I’m still drinking flat whites and wearing odd socks! We’re writing and recording all the time which is great, so hopefully next time we chat I’ll have some new news…
