INTERVIEW: Efya

1.       Hi Efya, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I am doing great considering the turbulent times we are all in. I have taken this time to really focus on the things that are important to me like family and of course my music.

2.       Can you talk to us more about your latest single “The One”?

It is a love song. It’s about you asking your significant other or love interest the ultimate question…are you not the one? Is this meant to be or not, you’re both in love but is this love?… Love can be complicated lol you can both want and love each other, but will still question if each of you are ‘The One’.

3.       Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

There wasn’t a particular event but I definitely took inspiration from past situations and even just from my friends. We have all been there at some point where you start to question the relationship or love.

4.       Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

There are indeed plans to drop a video but ssshhhh don’t tell anyone! Hopefully will be dropping very very soon 😊 It will be colourful, that is all I can say, keep an eye out on my YouTube channel Efyamusic

5.       How was the recording and writing process?

Yes it was a very exciting experience. Tiwa and I both found ourselves in Ghana and happened to be at the studio the same time. We just connected, the vibes were right, we both loved the beat and the rest is history. I learnt a lot during the session and loved the way the link up and the writing process was just organic. It wasn’t pre-planned or set up, we just were in the same place and vibed out.

6.       What was it like to work with Tiwa Savage and how did that relationship develop?

Tiwa is a very talented artist, it was great to work with and connect with her woman to woman. At a time when there is so much going on in the world it is powerful for two black women to come together and create magic. I have known Tiwa for almost 10 years now, we are in the same industry and have performed at the same shows at times. We have just never had the opportunity to collaborate but I guess now was the right time.

7.       How much did she get to influence the song?

Tiwa definitely had influence on the song, the whole 2nd verse is her and I can say all those lyrics were Tiwa. We complimented each other on the record lyrically and vocally. It’s easy to add a lot to a record as we could both 100% relate to the topic.

8.       Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than working on your own?

It depends on what sound we are creating at the time. When I am collaborating, I always love to include the vision of the other artist or producer, I think that is super important as I respect artistry. In those instances, I may step back a little and allow them space to have creative input but when I’m working on my own its full throttle. I go in, long sessions, melodies, lyrics, I like to give it my all.

9.       What role does Ghana play in your music?

Ghana is my home and has a major influence over who I am and what I represent. Musically Ghanian Highlife has had a direct impact into the music I create, there was so much great music I grew up on. Ghana as a country has so much culture and vibrancy and I want to ensure that the world knows that and that I can contribute to putting my beautiful homeland, Ghana, on the map.

10.   Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes! I am, currently working on my album which is really exciting. Creating an album is such a different process to doing singles, everything needs to be just right. The body of work is a representation of who am I so I need to present it to world properly.

11.   Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Not set date in mind, hoping to drop it before the end of the year. The focus for now is my singles which will lead into the album. More music and videos to come

12.   Any plans to hit the road?

As soon as the boarders open we are going everywhere!!! I am ready to take my music international and connect with my fans around the world. Europe is definitely on the list, I just want to perform and share the Efya vibes with you all. On stage is where I really breathe fire.

13.   What else is happening next in Efya’s world?

Aside from working on my album which is priority, I am keeping busy.. collaborations… content creation… shooting videos.. I am trying to do as much as possible as safely as possible. We are in a pandemic so safety and health come first but whatever I can do that is creative and safe I will get stuck in.
