INTERVIEW: Ryan Lane

Hi Ryan, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

What’s up! I’m doing great. How are you?

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Forever”?

Yes. “Forever” is actually one of my favorite songs. No, it really is one of my favorite songs now!

Just how I connected to the concept of the song… I felt like “maaan, I just went through this” and I don’t know how Marcella (@MarcellaPrecise of Lady And A Tramp) knew. Her & Tramp are really dope at just reading the room…observing people and figuring out how regular conversations about life are actually songs. It lined up with what I was living through at that moment and when they pressed play, I was like ‘this is dope, how did you know I was going through this?’

I’m so grateful that “Forever” connects with people so much that they hit me up online expressing how my singing or the song helps get them through the day.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

The filming process was really dope, to be in a space where we were all a bit under pressure to get ready for it and get everything done in a week’s time. To have to pick up choreography in a very short time via Zoom (shout out to my dance partner in the video TK (follow her at @_tk0 ) because we were and are just coming out of a pandemic right now and to pick the different looks from my own closet. Not being able to go shopping and try on new looks, I had to create my visual story from my own closet.

It was a very unique feeling to be prepared and learn for myself, like “wow, I really was prepared to do this the whole time”. The actual day was great. Shout out to the video director ( @BmarFamous) on this one. We all followed the rules with masks and kept our distance. And worked as a team to get it done.

How was the recording and writing process?

Well you know I’m working with the legend himself Naughty By Nature’s own super producer Kaygee and the great Lady And A Tramp (follow them at @LadyandATrampMusic). It’s always just organic and moves every fast. We always have a fun time. Like, I’ll come with a melody , Precise will automatically hear lyrics and Tramp is always on quality control adding to & stitching together the best of what we’re all bringing to the table. It just flows, Literally anything can happen in the moment.

How have the times that we’re living in, influenced you as an artist?

I’m just trying to be prepared when I get the call to do what my art and life requires while being safe.

Perfect example, KayGee and Tramp calling to say, let’s go, let’s get it. “Forever” is up next! I was prepared to answer “LET’S GO”.

This time in quarantine has allowed me to focus on being better vocally, writing more, dancing, painting and even paying more attention to my health and habits.

What was it like to work with Illtown Sluggaz and how did that relationship develop?

WOW! Well first of all, let me say this… being able to grow up watching Naughty By Nature’s KayGee (@KayGeeNBN) and Vin Rock (@UncleVinRock) on Tv and to know how amazing Kay is as a producer through his work outside of the group with acts like Next, Jaheim and Aaliyah, and to NOW actually work with them is amazing.

Essentially, I came in as writer on some other projects with Kaygee’s long time collaborators Marcella Precise & Tramp. From there I started to shine through the work. It was a unanimous feeling in the SLugga Music Family (@illtownSluggaz), that it was time, Go Time. So we’re gonna keep going! I was patient and kept doing the work. Now here we are.

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than working on your own?

Yes. Absolutely. It’s the human thing to do. I’m open to hearing different ideas as I know it’s a group effort. Keeping an open mind helps show me where I fit into the equation. And that’s what’s important in any kind of collaboration. Finding your place.

What role does NYC play in your music?

Ahh man..It plays a huge role in my music. I was born and raised in New York. I’ve been travelling on the trains since I was about 11 years old to take part in events, auditions etc. So early on I realized Inspiration comes from the streets, the trains, the people, the tall buildings, the good energy and the not so good energy. It’s especially present in my style of fashion and music. I like to bring a street style paired with classic elements. Just representing that whole energy of being a creative from New York.

How has the likes of Ne-Yo influenced your writing?

Ne-yo is very distinctive! When you hear him or his writing you know it’s him. I’m so grateful for all the amazing artists before me that I get to learn from. I’m just a fan of R&B music.. classic, 90’s, current, whatever.. R&B’s Singer/songwriters like Ne-yo, Bruno Mars & Pharrell all write and perform from a place of honesty which is what I do as well.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

YES! KayGee & Lady And A Tramp have me working overtime! I feel like “Forever” and the energy of it, has re-opened a place for everyone, it’s a vibe that we’ve been on for a while, a Feel Good Vibe. I exude that energy anyway so I’m really happy that it’s connecting with listeners and I get to just be me when I make music. It just feels right. You can expect a lot more from me in the coming months.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Hmmm.. a title. I’m so excited for it all. It might end up being something that connects to a feeling of nostalgia..a classic R&B motif. Something that’s a reminder of music that felt good, but my fresh new take on it with my #LAAT Slugga Music team. No name yet but stay tuned..

Any plans to hit the road?

Definitely. When we are able to travel. Slugga Music is a collective of awesome artists, producers, songwriters, and just major creatives of many talents. So as the movement grows, the tours, shows, content and opportunities to show fans that I appreciate the love, is definitely on the horizon. Until then, a Zoom concert maybe?

What else is happening next in Ryan Lane’ world?

Everything! Especially in these times we live in. I am grateful to be able to express myself creatively through many of the things I have a talent for..and to comfortably move into different spaces doing things I already have a genuine love for. Like clothing design and styling, visual art, songwriting, dancing etc. Being as multifaceted as an artist can be. I don’t call myself an “artist” just for music. Basically anything my heart leads me to do, I want to do and be great at doing.
