Swiss native Lorenza Sala is passionate about quality products, craftsmanship, and small businesses. She’s also been captivated by the American Dream and the U.S. being the “land of opportunity.” So much so, Ms. Sala has been inspired to pursue her own dream: encouraging artisans from America and Switzerland to share their creations with the world, through her new business, MadeByUs.
Similar to the well known small business promoter, Etsy, MadeByUs was created for buyers and sellers to join together for a cause. For Lorenza, that’s centered on thinking before we buy, and supporting families by buying from family-owned businesses. She believes buying mass-produced products hurts our economies more than it aids them. Ms. Sala was captured by the entrepreneurial spirit of America but ultimately believes citizens from countries all over the world should help each other grow. We had the pleasure of interviewing her to learn more.
You have stated before that you’ve been seduced by America. Can you tell me about a moment you experienced where America swept you off of your feet?
“I’ve always known that Americans are hard workers and have a huge sense of entrepreneurship, an idea that I probably adopted through movies and literature since I’m an avid consumer of both communication forms. Those made the concept of the American Dream become an inspiration for so many around the world.
Ms. Sala explains that her “interest in the United States went deeper after the election of President Trump” and American companies relocating to U.S. soil. She says “It was such a contrast with the European situation, where the globalist mentality has basically plunged the manufacturing sector, represented by family-run companies and small businesses, into collapse while moving big businesses to China.”
What is the overall message that you would like to get across about your company?
“The present situation of uncertainty, fear, and division among people, leads exactly to the point, the message of my website, MadeByUs: we need to be self-sufficient, countries should be able to produce their own products without depending on other countries!
When countries are more independent, people are more independent: we have the resources for it to be that way, resources that can be used to produce exceptional and high-quality products (food, pharmaceutics, everyday tools, technology, etc.). I would like to see manufacturers, creatives, farmers, become producers of the value of their work. “
Do you have a favorite artisanal product from a seller in your store?
“Currently, the products from my store are very different from each other, I don’t have a favorite one. As you can see they range from Bulldog puppies to spirits, from paintings to jam…Manufacturing can be anything, as long as it’s made, created, developed by the talent, ingenuity, and [the] passion of the people!
Companies mentioned in the banners are also interesting because they represent Swiss and American entrepreneurs or creators that have decided to use their skills to create independent activities. For instance, Full Genie System is the business of an American friend of mine, specializ[ing]in engines. His solutions are very innovative and competitive on the market. I personally like the products and companies that appear on my website.”
MadeByUs is a fairly new company. What would you like future sellers and buyers to know about what makes your online eCommerce business special?
“I would like my future sellers and buyers to know that MadeByUs is special because it is dedicated to a niche of people that value, appreciate, and choose high quality over mass production. There is no intention or interest to compete with Big Tech. It’s a family run business for family business owners and families. My dream is to see it grow and attract more people worldwide, not only in Switzerland and in the United States. That’s why it was thought to be translated into four languages…I want the users to understand we are among family members, we’re there to listen to their needs and help them. If they don’t find what they’re looking for in a certain time we would make sure they’ll find it the next time! I believe it’s important in such a competitive market to be flexible and attentive to the needs of our public.”
