INTERVIEW: Armaan Malik

Q1. Hi Armaan, welcome to VENTS! How have you been? Can you talk to us more about your latest single next 2 me.

Ans: Hey there, glad to be talking to you guys! Well, ‘next 2 me’ is my new English single. I never planned to release this as my second track, but when I wrote this in lockdown it just made absolute sense to put it out now. I was browsing through the internet one day when I came across this quote: “Missing someone isn’t about how long it’s been since you’ve seen them or the amount of time since you’ve talked. It’s about that very moment when you’re doing something and wishing they were right there by your side.” This quote somewhat hit a chord with me, and inspired me to write ‘next 2 me.’

Q2. Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Ans: The global lockdown has been tough on all of us, especially for those who are quarantined away from their loved ones. I wanted to capture that feeling of missing someone and wishing that they were next to you. We may have all the devices in the world to keep us connected, but having that person next to you is a different feeling altogether, something that no digital connection can ever compare to. Now, more than ever, I believe anyone can easily connect to the song.

Q3. Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?Ans: Yes I am releasing a cool animated lyric video to go along with the record!

Q3. How was the recording and writing process?

Ans: For the first month of the lockdown, I did not make new music. I had just released my debut English single ‘Control’ and was busy promoting it. After that, I somehow couldn’t get myself to write new music even though I had all the time in the world. I was seeking inspiration.

Around early May, I finally sat down in my home studio and went through a bunch of beats that my producer friend sent me on mail, and one of his ideas really clicked! I ended up writing a melody and just recorded a hook line which is ‘all I want is you next to me.’ When it came to putting the words to it, I was still confused as to where exactly I wanted to go with it. But then, I came across that particular quote (which I mentioned earlier) and it just made me realize that this is such a tough time for people who are separated from their loved ones in the lockdown. The missing is real. Given that I already had the hook line in place, I then weaved the whole track’s narrative around that sentiment and that’s how ‘next 2 me’ was written.

Q4. What role does India play in your music?

Ans: India currently is still my primary market. My journey began from here, my fandom took birth here! I’ve done a considerable amount of work in this market across genres and languages, but in late 2017, I took the route of chasing my life-long dream of breaking into the global pop market. I’ve always loved singing in English, but no one from India had represented it on a global stage. I wanted to be that artiste.

India being such a strong market for me, I wanted to take my new music and everything that I’ve built here and spread it across the globe. I know my fans and listeners are championing for me, and this support is all that I need to push forth and break boundaries!

Q5. Does the new single mean we can expect any more new material – how’s that coming along? Any tentative release date or title in mind

Ans: Oh yes, I am working on a lot of new music! Some interesting collaborations are in the works as well. Even though I really want to be consistent with my releases, I’m taking it as it comes and going with the flow. Given the current scenario and the global climate, I want to plan these upcoming releases strategically.

Q6. Any plans to hit the road?

Ans: I miss my live shows so much it’s unreal! It’s a bummer not being able to tour. But when things settle down and it’s safe to do concerts, I’ll definitely hit the road! I really miss performing in the UK, will plan and come there hopefully soon too!

Q7. What else is happening next in Armaan Malik’s world?

Ans: I’m going to be doing a bunch of exciting collaborations this year in English and across other languages too, so pretty excited about that! Other than that I plan on making a short-movie and document my whole journey because so much has happened in the past few years! I want to tell my story and share some stuff people haven’t known about me.
