SINGLE REVIEW: Speakin’ Again by Ross Lovell

Brisbane based singer-songwriter and composer Ross Lovell has just released Speakin’ Again, a fun, rollicking song focusing on the joys of reigniting relationships and thepleasure of reunions. Ross’ love of classic pop, romantic movie themes and folk music seeps into this heartfelt track, a lively mediation that explores friendships and human connections. With several accolades awarded him over the years, including his album Moment to Moment winning the BASF/SUNNIE Album of the Year at the QueenslandRecording Industry Association Awards, Ross has continued to write and record and refine his unique brand of outsider folk-rock pop. The track kicks off with a rousing introduction which features sax and a swinging buoyant groove followed by a low-key verse that highlights the subtle nuances of Ross’ voice. This persuasive part soon transforms into the chorus section which is enlivened by a hooky melody and a wall of sound layer of backing vocals. These two main parts are segmented by instrumental organ breaks that add another dimension to the track. Ross’ musical career has been interesting, from winning awards to having to put it on hold indefinitely in the nineties when he was paralysed by Guillain-Barré syndrome, a devastating auto-immune disease. The experience and his gratitude to all who so strongly supported him through his ten-year journey of recovery only increased his desire to be able to give something positive to life through his music. Speakin’ Again is imbued with this sense of hope and purpose: it’s bright and hypnotic, blurring the line between folk, world music and pop with a little rock in there also. Ross’ ability to transcend styles is evident on this new track, and another work of his was recently licensed for placement in a TV series being made in Mexico for HBO Latin America. Speakin’ Again will no doubt do a great job of re-introducing Ross Lovell to a wider audience and initiate a timely reappraisal of his musical output.
