Miami’s innovative and genre-bending hybrid orchestra, Nu Deco Ensemble, have debuted their live video performance of Grammy Award-winning composer/DJ Mason Bates’ “Mothership”. Watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDrRqFlHejA. “We were thrilled to perform the music of Mason Bates, one of the preeminent and most innovative composers of our time,” shares Nu Deco co-founder and artistic director, Sam Hyken. “Mothership, which marries both technology with beautiful acoustical instruments, and is genre-bending in its own right, is a perfect showcase for Nu Deco Ensemble.”
On a similar note, fellow co-founder, artistic director and conductor, Jacomo Bairos, shares, “Mason Bates has been and is THE trailblazing pioneer in the merging of the two worlds of electronically created music with acoustic orchestral instruments. Since our days he and I shared together at Juilliard, he has been the standard by which many composers today look to when fusing their works with electronics. He continues to push the genre in exciting and adventurous ways, which ultimately lead to his Grammy winning recording of ‘The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs’. It felt so rewarding to present this NEW chamber version of ‘Mothership’ created for Nu Deco Ensembles unique hybrid mix of instruments to Miami. His additional use of improvisation, blues and jazz harmonies, as well as the intergalactic themes of launching and docking into space, create such a powerful and visceral ride for the audience.”
The performance, which was originally filmed in April 2018, is the latest from a string of live videos released by the ensemble over the past few weeks. These include reimagined versions of the music of Daft Punk, Bill Withers and Nina Simone, as well as collaborations with Kimbra, PJ Morton and Ben Folds.
