As a work of fiction, the iLL Opera, derived from ‘illustrated opera’, combines aspects of political and social commentary, offering a unique reflection on the world today. The story is set in a divided time when only the most sensational acts are acknowledged. An introverted man is looking for the attention of a beautiful woman who he finds mesmerizing, but he must sacrifice every virtue and good part of himself for her to see him. Falling prey to the seductions of easy fame, his journey is transformative, but it may ultimately cost him everything.
Cash pulled from a diverse set of influences while creating the songs for the project, including the first single B-Side, which was released in April. “The music in the opera is kind of like if you threw Queen, Kanye West, The Clash, Stevie Wonder and the Gorillaz together,” says Cash. “This is also the first project that I’ve worked on that has me dipping into the use of my own voice.”
After composing and recording the libretto and score, Kenny sought out visual collaborators to bring his creation to life. He first began working with Connecticut artist Rich Smith, whom he commissioned to illustrate and then story-board the opera into a graphic novel. He then discovered that he already had his animator, Guzman Gonzales, working right under his nose at his studio, Factory Underground.
“I figured doing this project with the visual elements added in would allow me to reach a different audience and tell a different story in a new and exciting way,” says Kenny. “I have always loved comic books, science fiction, stories of illuminati, and tales of redemption, so voicing myself through an even more caricatured graphic approach just seemed right.”
As co-owner of Factory Underground Studio in Norwalk, CT, Cash has worked with a diverse clientele over the past ten years, including rap legend Rakim, Sid Wilson (Slipknot), multi-Grammy Award winning Jose Feliciano, jamband Goose, and Jethro Tull guitarist Martin Barre. He has scored award winning films (ADAM) and, as ½ of husband/wife duo, Che-val, he has licensed music to popular television shows and composed for international brands such as Datto.
iLL Opera is being released in 3 parts, and will see accompanying audio singles released to all digital streaming outlets along the way. Kenny plans to continue the story in volumes, collaborating with artists across multiple disciplines, and eventually submit their work to film festivals.
