INTERVIEW: Prinz Grizzley

Hi Prinz, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi there, I am well thanks! It was pretty tough times with all the cancellations just before my album release! But the dark skies are starting to brighten up as we already begin to loosen the lockdown rules here back in Austria. And now slowly are able to begin making shy plans for the rest of the year. It ain’t all lost yet.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Nothing Left But Scars”?

Is about the inner and outer scars love can do to us. But scars dont stop us from searching for that eternal high love can bring to us. There´s always hope that things are different in every new attempt. Our scars should be seen and exist as a reminder to not make the same mistakes again and again!

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

To be honest, I really don’t know where the song came from! I also can’t recall the writing of it! Maybe it came to me in my sleep, I got up, wrote it down, recorded a demo on my phone and went back to sleeping!

This process of writing doesn´t happen that way too often but maybe this was one of these songs.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

We shot the video in 3 days in different locations around my area. It wasn’t easy to organize the video shooting in times of Covid-19. At one point we even had the police turn up as we were shooting some scenes in the middle of the woods. Luckily it was the first day when the government loosened the lockdown rules and they only turned up to check where all the haze came from! You can never have enough haze when you do a music video 🙂

The single comes off your new album To My Green Mountains Home – what’s the story behind the title?

The title comes from the song “Green Mountains Home” that is on the Album. I just finished writing it before we hit the studio. It’s about my home and the things sometimes happen around there. After the record was done I realized that most of the songs, not only “Green mountains home”, draw inspiration from where I am from! Then it clicked, I had just recorded an ode “to my green mountains home”.

How was the recording and writing process?

I had written around 65 songs over the two years since my debut album “Come On In” (2017). and My producer and I then broke it down to 30 and as I started rehearsing the songs with my band for the recording. We had it down to 18 songs which we then recorded in the course of ten days. We recorded in a studio near my hometown, we had a great time and I think Beau Bedford, who came over from Dallas to record and produce, really enjoyed the Austrian Mountains!

What was it like to work with Beau Bedford and how did that relationship develop?

Beau is a great human being, very humble, a big heart and it’s just great being around him. Since I am a big fan of the previous albums he produced (Paul Cauthen and the Texas Gentlemen), it was a great day for me when he told he wanted to come over to Austria and do the Album with me!! Mind blowing!

I met him in 2018 at the Americanafest in London (UK), me and my buddy sat at a table next to him in a restaurant, we started talking, so the story began.

How much did he get to influence the album?

A big one! He gave me the confidence in that what I do and write is right! Doesn´t matter where I come from as long as its honest!

What role does Austria play in your music?

It’s everywhere! You just have to find it!

How has Sturgill Simpson and Chris Stapleton influenced your writing?

Both don´t have too big of an influence in my writing but they really influenced and proved right my way of thinking in terms of “do what you want, write the songs and play the music you like”! Don’t copy, try to be yourself! And yes I think they both belong to the greatest songwriters that walk the earth right now.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

You answered that with your question “what role does Austria play in your music”.

I think as a songwriter you have to have an open ear to the stories and incidents happening around you! If you pay attention to yourself and what´s around you inspiration will find you!

Any plans to hit the road?

I would have a Sweden tour in August and also would be on the Americanafest in Nashville in September but I really dont know if any of these dates will happen!! I think the rest of this year is really hard to plan so I’m concentrating on 2021!

What else is happening next in Prinz Grizzley’s world?

There´s one more single release on the 15th of June (the song is called Magdalena) before the new album will drop on the 26th of June!

I also plan to do a live stream from the studio on the album release day, my band and I will play the record in whole! So yeah there´s exciting times ahead!
