INTERVIEW: Travalley

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Howdy ! 🙂 We have been great, we are just trying to keep busy in this crazy time !

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Dear Babe”?

Dear babe is a song about my inability to flirt and just general awkwardness in everyday convo.

I have never been able to really figure out a good way to express my emotions, it generally just comes out in a pile of embarrassing words. The song itself is quite upbeat and fun and is made to have a dance to.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Not one particular event but rather an entire teenage life of shit conversations and a lot of I shouldn’t have said that or I could have said this. I think a lot of people go through the same kind of situations where a normal convo where you are trying to flirt just never seems to work out how you plan it to.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

The filming process was pretty basic, we just had 1 camera, a few lights and a heap of chillies. Gaz Harrison filmed the video for us which he definitely made us eat a lot more chillies which I think made the video. We came up with the idea pretty last minute and decided to wing it. Pressure makes diamonds as they always say.

How was the recording and writing process?

The recording and writing process was completed in about a month. This was one of those songs that came together extremely quickly. I generally write the guitar section first, then add lyrics on top of that. With this song I wanted to mix it up a bit so we wrote the song in Drop D which creates this really lovely swelly sounding guitar. The recording process was completed in a day. At its core the song is super simple and short so we wanted to make the final product sounding as live and as big as possible.

What role does Melbourne play in your music?

Melbourne has definitely helped us gain quite a large following in a short amount of time. Since playing as a 2 piece ‘November last year’ we have had the ability to headline venues such as The Gaso, The Evelyn and the Espy. On top of these shows and is the reason why I love the Melbourne music scene so much is we have played a number of smaller venues through the week which have definitely helped us gain a really good following. There was a time where we played 20 shows in 3 months and every crowd was different.

Shout out to some amazing Melbourne bands. Spaghetti Stains, Mona Bay, Loose Bricks, Danitchy, Gaia Scarf.

How would you say your family bonds gets to influence your writing as a whole?

Because we have grown up together I guess you get a better understanding of the person on all levels. Because we are a 2 piece the writing process always goes through meI “Levi” writing the guitar and vocals, and then we jam it. I think the best thing about being brothers is knowing that you don’t care if you annoy the other person by sending them any and every bit of music you write. A lot of the stuff we release comes from those B side songs that we didn’t think would come to anything.

How has Hockey Dad and The Jungle Giants influenced your writing?
Hockey Dad have made us a lot more energetic as a band. Sam and myself went and saw them at The Corner a few years ago and it was one of the most amazing live bands I have seen. To see 2 people make so much noise and see the entire crowd going off really lit a fire in us to start making more music like that.

Jungle Giants have had more of an impact on the way we write music. A lot of the chords they use I have started incorporating into our songs and the way they structure songs are quite similar to us. I really love how they just chuck in a section so left field but it works.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
We have new stuff on the way, we don’t have an exact day but in the next 2 months you will hear music from us. We have 3 songs ready to release so who knows when they will all be out.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

We are going to do a lot of re releases just so we can actually play the songs live how they are recorded. We are releasing Mr Right and Break Free again.

As for new songs we haven’t come up with names for them yet. I generally leave that to the last minute.

What else is happening next in Travelley’ world?

We are currently working on an Event called Travfest. We have started making house music so you can use your imagination and try to picture what that will be like 🙂
