INTERVIEW: Sugar Joans

Hi Sugar, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi! You know just living that quarantine life. It’s been a weird time, but trying to make the most of it.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “No Patience?”

Yes! I’m incredibly excited for this song to finally be out in the world.  It is a song that I have worked on for over a year and I’m so ready for you all to hear it!

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

“No Patience” was inspired by a breakup I had gone through a few months back. Though we had intense feelings for each other at the time, he later came to realize that he wasn’t ready to commit to a relationship. Instead of staying in a place of emotional limbo, I made the choice to fully walk away and cut ties because at this point in my life I simply have “no patience” for indecisiveness.

How was the recording and writing process?

I wrote this song with my best friend. We met at Berklee College of Music and stayed in touch. She came to visit LA on a trip and we got in the studio and pumped out the song in 3 hours. It was magical. We worked on the instrumentation and production on the song for about a year to perfect it. And it was the fist song in a series of many that we have written for my project.

What role does LA play in your music?

I was born and raised in Los Angeles, so my ties to this city are incredibly strong. I am proud to be from a culture where the music scene is so prevalent.

How has your upbringing influenced your writing?

Growing up I was always surrounded by music. My father is an incredible vocalist, and he has been a huge inspiration to me.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?  Yes! I am working on a full length project currently, but in the meantime I will be releasing singles on a regular basis.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

I do have some things in mind but you will have to just wait and see …<3

Any plans to hit the road?

Once we can gather together safely I absolutely cannot WAIT TO GO ON TOUR!

What else is happening next in Sugar Joans’ world?

I’ve been cooking a lot at home recently and just continuing to write and stay focused on my art!
