INTERVIEW: Mak. D. Ekko

Hi Mak, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Ive been good for the most part just doing my best i guess.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Cinderella”?

Yeah definetly, long story short its a song for my daughter who i havent been able to see for some time now.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

You could say that I guess, I have 2 kid’s, one 4 year old boy Niko and a 2 year old little girl Cinderella. And to sum it up as much as I can me and their mother ended up not working out and due to the circumstance’s she hasnt let me see them since, and life has just been a little hard givin the fact my duaghter doesnt even know who I am. So I wrote her a song to make sure she atleast knows im with her even if im half a country away.

Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

There are definitely “plans” anytime i write a song with meaning to it, there is always the urge to create a visual! But with progress comes patience i guess

The single comes off your new album Stay Loud – what’s the story behind the title?

Ok so for the first I wanna say 3 to 4 year’s of what you would call a “career” I was constantly hated on by my peer’s wich is ya know class mate’s co worker’s other local artist and even people I called “friend”, there for awhile even my ex switched up and started putting false rumor’s in people’s ear’s about me! Fellow rapper’s who i had worked with on multiple occasions almost always making move’s at my expense behind my back and the support was always talked about but never shown and after a few year’s of it I fell back for awhile and pretty much secluded myself to the house and it wasnt so much that i was depressed as i was just thinking and going over the choices I had available at the time and so in recent month’s to the last year I started working on the tape “Stay Loud” and it just came to me while I was recording the video to my “intended” title track for the album “Move” it just hit me and i realised that no matter what my so called friend’s, babymomma or even family wants to put me through I wont be silenced and so it was short and straight to the point “Stay Loud” kinda anti climatic but ya know, I like it.

How was the recording and writing process?

I’ve been suffering from a really long weird form of writers block for awhile. So getting in the studio to create a song is kind of a hit and miss for me most days. There are definitely a few songs that came very naturally like “Cinderella”, “More than life” and “Now I know” but the other tracks were for sure a bit more challenging now that im finally branching out and really trying to become more versatile all and all at the end of the day i just love being in the booth

What role does Oregon play in your music?

I moved to oregon or the West Coast or how ever you want to put it specifically because i knew i had more of chance to make it out here than anywhere. Originally I was just a kid from Melrose Florida but eventually found myself in the midwest as a teen so coming here was just a natural move i guess.

What aspect of your own personal life did you get to explore on this record?

I got to really lay out where my mind set has been the last 2 years, I was gettin into things i had lost, mistakes i made and the parts of life I miss and cant get back all while makin the point that I can still gas a beat on tracks like “Move” but if you listen to the album youll notice a change from beginning to end because each song was made months apart within the span of 2 years and over that time schedule ive done more growing than I feel I’ve ever done in my life mentally.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

Quick answer is everything I write 99.99 percent of the time the words you hear in my songs are directly related to real life experiences ive had

Any plans to hit the road?

Most definetly! No if’s or and’s at the moment me and my team are planning and saving every dime while doing our best to work torwards the goal of a tour but we will for sure have to get our numbers up much much more before we even think about finally gettin on the bus

What else is happening next in Mak.D.Ekko’s world?

The next few years should be exciting for lack of a better word. Me and a few people from my team at the global news hub have got a few thing’s in the works like the new survival show myself and Steven Noland are putting together “The Journeymen” where we would be traveling to different locations around the Americas and eventually hopefully Africa and Australia etc. My long time buisness partner and friend Kenai Nu AKA founder the of WaxHouse RECORDS has got some plans hes putting together with his artist’s and we finally got a promotion deal worked out with a great and reliable company so all i can say is keep your eye for more videos and release dates.
