Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
We have been good! Thanks for asking. Trying to stay busy and productive. Taking advantage of the “break” to be more creative and more organized. Haha
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Night I (Don’t Stop)”?
This single is the first track that we will have put out since the fall of 2019. We decided late last year that we would be taking a break from playing for a while to work on writing new material and put focus on other parts life (like work, school and relationships) that can be hard to manage when you’re on the road a lot. This song is part of a story about our journey as a band, it’s about pushing through the hard times and learning how to lean on each other for support.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
I think this song was inspired by many events. It’s the culmination of 5 years of working together on this project, and just living life with each other. We have experienced so much together, but this is the first time that the music is self-reflective of the bands story. It feels really good to talk about it.
What role did the Sierra Nevada play in your writing process?
The Sierra Nevada have always been an inspiration for this project because it basically our back yard. We’ve all spent summers and winters driving through the canyon, camping in the giant sequoias, and jumping into the rivers. So, when we got the opportunity to get away for a weekend to record, it seemed like an appropriate setting.
How was the recording process?
It was amazing. We basically tore apart all of our personal home studio set ups and put it all together in this cabin that we rented for the weekend. The plan was to only work on ideas that were unique to this trip; we would see how many songs we could write and record in three days. We ended up with five songs that seemed to almost write themselves. At the end of the weekend, we realized that it was one cohesive body of music.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Good guess (haha)! The songs that we worked on, that snowy mountain weekend, will be released as an EP, entitled “Ponderosa,” in the early part of this summer.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Stay posted on the release date for “Ponderosa” by keeping up with our social media (@thehatedrugs).
What else is happening next in HATE DRUGS’ world?
Right now, our focus is on recording all of the material that we have been writing and coming up with creative ways to reach people in these strange times. We are looking forward to getting back on the road as soon as things get back to normal, but in the meantime, keep your eyes out for new videos and merch!
