For several years, we’ve been waiting and anticipating the launch of 5G (fifth generation) wireless networks. This has been coupled with plenty of hype from various providers who have been trying to get there first.
But as we roll into the second half of 2020 and soon 2021, this is soon to be a reality for most of the United States.
What’s the hype with 5G?
From the outset, 5G has been touted to dramatically affect more lives than any tech shift since the advent of the internet. The reason is that 5G allows us to realize the possibility of a fully integrated world.
Why? It’s simply because of its ubiquity, low latency, and speed.
5G networks that are mature will function at shorter ranges and higher frequencies than 4G. It’ll also rely on a solid infrastructure of towers within a hundred feet of each other. This way, they can support all devices with literally no latency and run at speeds multiple times faster (20 times) than what 4G offers.
Also, 5G antennas use less power, which makes them preferable for connecting small battery-powered IoT (Internet of Things) devices.
Several years back, we made the switch from 3G to 4G networks, but the hype was not as much as what we have now with 5G networks. To industry faithfuls, they compare the shift to moving from using a typewriter to a computer.
What This Means for Businesses…
In the United States, 5G will affect how businesses operate. It’ll help build better-connected cities, enhance gaming capabilities, create smarter vehicles, augment our mode of communication, and expand the realm of augmented reality and virtual reality.
This technology will affect all industries, and it’ll go on to become a vital part of our manufacturing process, infrastructure, entertainment, communication, and healthcare.
For the next ten years and beyond, 5G will become the driver of the global economy. The major hype surrounding 5G is hinged on three things: faster speeds, faster connections, and faster cloud access.
And with current outdated systems across the US, the jump is going to be huge!
Who Is Rolling Out 5G Right Now?
Major governments and telecom companies are all scrambling to get fully operational 5G networks to market as the norm. For example, in the US, some neighbourhoods are already experiencing 5G networks but this is still expensive and not the norm.
Providers such as DISH (currently a TV service provider), are investing billions to bring 5G as an affordable service, and they are one of the few companies paving the way for 5G in America. Even though it’s not functional yet, it’s committed a lot of resources and setting the pace for the next few months
From what we’ve been able to gather when Charlie Ergen, the CEO of the company took the stand in court – at the T-Mobile/Sprint merger antitrust trial – we discovered that the satellite provider has already concluded plans to build several 5G networks nationwide in the preceding months.
According to Ergen, before the last quarter of 2022, the company would have deployed nothing less than 10,000 5G sites. Before the end of 2023, the company plans to build an estimated 30,000 sites and their 5G services would be fully operational.
That’s not all. According to the agreements of the merger that they signed, DISH will acquire Sprint’s 850MHz spectrum and all of their prepaid assets. They will also enter an MVNO agreement that would see them enjoy T-Mobile’s network while the company will build its wireless infrastructure.
So 5G is just on the horizon bringing exciting opportunities to the US!
