INTERVIEW: Yawdel

Hi Yawdel, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi VENTS

I’m fine thank you, I’ve been quite sad with the situation regarding the lockdown for you humans, and I truly understand. We used to have lots of pandemic on my planet in the past because we were not respecting our environment (which is different from earth by the way). As soon as our leaders changed their mind we started to have a better knowledge and respect for our planet. It took some time so I’m rather confident that the situation will move in the right direction for you humans too!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Taste It”?

Taste it is my first official single, it’s a beautiful Future-bass track that has a strong message – Always follow your instinct in life and live for you passions, not for a job you hate.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Well I was listening to some classical music from Joep Franssens and his choir’s orchestral pieces in particular gave me goosebumps and inspired me.

I think I came up with the introduction of that song pretty fast, I wanted a very atmospheric intro and a big melodic drop. It was obvious that it would need some vocals too.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

Well, I’m grateful that since my arrival on earth, some great people from the anime and manga world are pretty enthusiastic with how I look, move and my story.

I had written a good script based on Zhiko story and the message we’d like to deliver with « Taste it »

The team of great manga artists I work with started to draw it and the video came flawlessly, there are lots of hours involved into it and very fine details if you look closely:)

How was the recording and writing process?

We didn’t have the chance to meet with Zhiko but we talked a lot about the track, I had the instrumental finished pretty quickly and I told him to do his thing regarding the top line and vocals, it just had to be quite sparse in the drop because there were still a lot going on with music.

What was it like to work with Zhiko and how did that relationship develop?

He’s a great guy, nice and professional. We were looking for a special vibe and tone on the vocals and I think he nailed it. He’s very versatile. We went back and forth with the vocals, trying some alternative takes.

How much did he get to influence the song?

First thing the lyrics are based on his own story. A few years ago he was working in a restaurant completely tired of the same routine (with a terrible boss and annoying customers) so one day he just took off his apron, walked out and never went back. He decided to focus on his passion for his music and it finally paid off.

His story makes a lot of sense with my childhood because on my planet we try to push children to do what they are better at – it’s a natural process. I think that if you force yourself into something you don’t really enjoy doing, the final result will be just painful.

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than your own?

Of course! A vocal is always the main dish in a song, so you need not to occupy too much space if you want to let it breath. Also I had to change some things in term of structure of the song, Ziko had some cool ideas too to make his voice a bit robotic or processed sounding on certain parts of the song.

How’s your new EP coming along?

My new EP will be out at the end of June, it’s a 4 track EP and I’m very excited to release it because it’s been quite a long process.

First, I had to get familiar with human computers and software and to be honest I also lost some files when I was space travelling a few months ago, I didn’t knew that some hard drives were not heat resistant!

Fortunately I learned to back up my stuff after that and now I’m more productive than ever!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Yes, we have this great song co-written with Laurent John and Dr Meaker. It’s called « Can’t Escape ».Laurent is an amazing vocalist, I can’t wait for you to listen to this and see the videos we’ve made too. It will be out on 2nd June.

What else is happening next in Yawdel’ world?

A lot! I mean I’m writing music all day in the lab alongside my manga mates, I’m planning to release 2 tracks every month after the EP release.

Also I must tell you that I will certainly appear for real as soon as we’ll be able to get out of the lab, I’m planning to work on some mixtapes too, delivering a lot of positive energy. I really think that people need a Yawdel in their life right now 🙂
