How will The Match event work?

“The Match: Champions for Charity” will pair Woods and Manning against Mickelson and Brady over 18 holes.

The front nine will be played in a four-ball format, meaning the hole is won by the team whose member gets the lowest score. The back nine will be in a modified alternate shot format in which all players tee off and then each team member alternates shots.

This is the second “The Match” event to occur, with the first taking place between Woods and Mickelson back in 2018.
Let’s be clear, though. Manning and Brady may not be golf champions like their partners, but the two are avid golfers. At the very least, they probably won’t embarrass themselves next to two golf legends.

Where is it taking place?

No fans will be in attendance, but the players are set to tee off at the Medalist Golf Club in Florida.
The course is familiar to Woods, who regularly practices there, meaning his team may have a slight advantage over the Mickelson-Brady duo.

Trash talk would take Woods-Manning vs. Mickelson-Brady to epic level

Regardless of the outcome of the match or the quality of the golf played, Sunday’s charity showdown between Tiger Woods and Peyton Manning and Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady figures to be good fun and a great show.

It is, after all, live golf featuring the biggest stars of this generation in golf and football at a cool golf course, Medalist, that boasts some of the biggest names on the PGA Tour as members … and it’s set to raise some $10 million for COVID-19 relief.

Add to that the curiosity factor of seeing Brady and Manning, out of their sporting element, play golf with Woods and Mickelson, should be pure, raw entertainment.

It all adds up to an automatic recipe for success.

You know what will make the dish even more delicious, though?

Some spirited, if salty, banter among the four players, all of whom will be mic’d up for the match.

If there could be one complaint about last Sunday’s COVID-19 relief charity match between Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson playing Rickie Fowler and Matthew Wolff, it was that the mic’d up banter between them fell surprisingly flat.

When Woods and Mickelson faced each other in that mano-a-mano $9 million winner-take-all match in November 2018, the two players were mic’d up, but the back-and-forth was more awkward than entertaining — particularly as Mickelson took the lead on the back nine and Woods, grinding to stay in the match, clammed up.

If the weeks and days leading up to Sunday’s match are any indication, there could be some colorful needling among the players at Medalist.

Mickelson, after all, carries one of the sharpest needles on the PGA Tour, and Manning is highly underrated for his comedic appeal, having successfully hosted “Saturday Night Live’’ back in the day and currently hosts the entertaining “Peyton’s Places” shorts on ESPN.

Woods is more guarded with his barbs, but has an understated way about getting his points across. Of the four participants, Brady probably comes off as the most serious, so his contribution to the banter is less certain.

What is certain is this: Phil Mickelson is primed.

In an interview with The Post this past week, he was jumping out of his skin over the phone with his smack talk, taunting Woods in particular.

“I’m excited to go to Tiger’s home course,’’ Mickelson said. “He was insistent on us doing this at his home course. He was not happy about losing the first time [in Las Vegas]. And he wants to win badly the second time, so much so that everyone else wanted to play elsewhere and he insisted that we do it at his home course. That just makes me and Tom more motivated to go to his home course and beat him.

“Tiger thinks he has a huge advantage playing there. That’s fine. We’ll take it to him and Peyton, and there will be no excuses. Tom and I are going to go down there and put it to them. We’ll make it so that every time Tiger shows up at his home course, he’ll have a bad memory.”

Mickelson is embracing the fact that him and Brady are the betting underdogs.

“We should absolutely be underdogs,’’ he said. “We’re going to be at Tiger’s home course, and you’ve got Peyton [two] shots lower than Tom on his handicap. … So absolutely, they should be favored, but that motivates Tom and I even more. They’ll have no excuses when we dominate them.’’

In a recent TV interview with the four players to promote the event, when Mickelson bragged about his $9 million win in Vegas, Woods got up from his chair and fetched the green jacket from his fifth Masters victory (Mickelson has three) and jokingly used it as a blanket.

Let’s hope for more of that Sunday. Mickelson appears poised to provide it. Hopefully Woods will bring his sharp-tongued A game.

“Phil thrives in the smack-talking repartee,’’ Golf Channel analyst Brandel Chamblee told The Post this past week. “He loves to get the needle in, so I suspect Phil will be the one that needles the most.’’

As for Woods?

“Throughout my life watching Tiger, listening to him and even playing against him, I’ve always been amazed at how humble he is,’’ Chamblee said. “He’s never really talked smack. He doesn’t walk around like a peacock, doesn’t big-time players. By all comparisons, he’s been pretty darned humble. Tiger has never needed to needle.’’

Hopefully, Woods and the rest of the players will use the needle generously on Sunday. It’ll only add to what already figures to be a fun watch.

Medalist Golf Club has been the home course of several PGA Tour stars for years. On Sunday, the famed private club designed by Greg Norman and Pete Dye will be in the spotlight as it hosts “The Match: Champions for Charity.” Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson went head-to-head with $9 million on the line in 2018, and now they’ve invited Peyton Manning and Tom Brady to play as their respective partners in an effort to raise money for coronavirus relief. Tiger vs. Phil II will tee off at 2 p.m. ET.

Manning and Brady will receive three handicap strokes on the front nine during best ball play. On the back nine, the two teams will alternate shots to the hole. While Mickelson won in 22 holes against Woods in 2018, Woods and Manning are -190 money line favorites (risk $190 to win $100) in the current Woods vs. Mickelson odds. Mickelson and Brady are the underdogs, going off at +170 (risk $100 to win $170) at William Hill. Along with the main match play, plenty of Tiger vs. Phil prop bets are available. Before you lock in your own plays, be sure to see the top Tiger vs. Phil picks and predictions from SportsLine’s proven golf expert, Mike McClure.

McClure built SportsLine’s renowned golf prediction model, which has nailed two of the last three majors entering the weekend. The model predicted Gary Woodland’s first career major championship at the U.S. Open even though he wasn’t the favorite entering the weekend. The model also called Brooks Koepka’s historic victory at the 2019 PGA Championship, predicting he’d hold his lead in the home stretch.

In all, McClure’s advanced computer model has nailed a whopping six majors entering the weekend. And already this season, the model called Justin Thomas winning the CJ Cup, Rory McIlroy taking down the WGC-HSBC Champions and Viktor Hovland earning his first career PGA Tour victory at the Puerto Rico Open. Anyone who has followed it is way up.

Now, with sportsbooks taking bets on Tiger vs. Phil 2, McClure has scoured the odds, revealed his top prop bets, and picked a winner. You can only see who to bet, and which props are a must-back, at SportsLine.

Top Tiger Woods, Peyton Manning vs. Phil Mickelson, Tom Brady predictions

One of the top prop bets McClure recommends: Back Mickelson and Brady to make the most birdies (-115). In 2014 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Brady partnered with Ricky Barnes in a foursome with Bill Belichick and Korn Ferry Tour player Jaime Driscoll. The latter recalls Brady shooting a 33 on the front nine with an eagle on the par-five second hole, so Brady’s reported 8.2 handicap to Manning’s 6.4 might not be an accurate indicator of what he can do at his best.

Meanwhile, Mickelson has always been known as a risk-taker and shot-maker, a formula that won’t penalize as harshly as it does in stroke play. Mickelson has never played at Medalist Golf Club, while Woods is a member, but he was the more aggressive of the two players the first time they went head-to-head in 2018. Look for Mickelson and Brady to use their length off the tee and pin-seeking ability as an advantage on Sunday, which is why they’re a strong play for the most birdies despite being underdogs.

How to make Woods, Manning vs. Mickelson, Brady picks

McClure is also high on a prop bet that almost lets you triple your money. Plus, he’s locked in his pick for which team will come out on top.

The Match II Betting Odds

Sportsbooks opened betting with Woods and Manning as heavy favorites and the public has largely agreed, with odds hovering around -200 for the Woods/Manning pairing to win at most shops. That means one would have to risk $2 to win $1 on Tiger and Peyton notching a victory in The Match II, while those that like Mickelson and Brady to win will find the betting line is around +175 at most books, which means one would net $1.75 for each $1 wagered on the underdogs.

Tiger Woods/Peyton Manning vs. Phil Mickelson/Tom Brady Prop Bets

Bookmakers have been chomping at the bit for meaningful live sporting events during the lockdown and now that one has surfaced, they certainly are not shying away from offering a multitude of ways to gamble on it. Oddsmakers have put props on the board that cover everything from the start of The Match II (“will all the players hit the fairway on hole No. 1”) to well past the event’s end (“will any of the participants golf with President Donald Trump before 2022”). There are plenty of intriguing lines on things such as performance (the yes side of “will any player record an eagle” is one of the most popular bets at a few books), attire (Tiger is a massive favorite to wear red on Sunday) and the broadcast (“how many times will host Charles Barkley say ‘terrible’’) available to be wagered on by bettors hungry for action. You can find a full list of props.

The Match Prize Pool

The last time Tiger and Phil went head-to-head in The Match, they vied for a winner-take-all $9 million purse that Mickelson ultimately took home after a 22 hole battle. This time the prize pool is at least $10 million, which was donated by WarnerMedia, and all of it will be going towards coronavirus relief efforts. There will be on-course incentives as well to raise additional money for charities such as the All In Challenge, American Red Cross, Direct Relief and Save Small Business. Charles Barkley will be joining in with the foursome for one hole and has a chance to score an additional $200,000 for charity if he can card a bogey or better.

The action will take place at Medalist Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Florida. The club was founded in 1995 and is regarded as one of the toughest places to play in the country, which may give Woods and Manning an advantage due to their familiarity. Medalist—which stretches nearly 7,600 yards—is the home course for several pros, including Woods, who holds the course record after shooting a 62 here back in 2011. Mickelson had never stepped foot on the grounds until this week, but the Arizona State product is confident that his team will be the victorious one on Sunday. Lefty told Golfweek that Tiger was adamant that The Match II be held at the club, giving the ‘visitors’ extra incentive to notch an upset win:

“I can’t wait to go to Tiger’s place and take him down. Tiger thinks he has a huge advantage playing there because he was insistent that this event is played on his home course. Despite everyone else wanting to play it elsewhere. That’s fine. We’ll take it to him and Peyton .There will be no excuses. It’s his home course but Tom and I are going to go down there and put it to them, and we’ll make it that every time Tiger shows up at his home course, he’ll have a bad memory.”

The Match: Champions for Charity Rules And Format

The Match: Champions for Charity will utilize a unique format in which the front nine will be played under best ball rules before shifting to modified alternate shot on the back nine. This means that the first nine holes will be use the score of whichever teammate shot the lowest, while the last nine will see each participant tee off and then alternate shots off the best drive. It is worth noting that Brady and Manning will each receive three strokes on the front nine, one for a Par 3, a Par 4 and Par 5. There are also some unique challenges for the golfers, including using only one club for the entirely of hole No. 5 and a variety of side bets that the participants will be encouraged to engage in to keep things unpredictable and interesting for the duration of the event.
