All is well! Life has been a bit strange, but I guess that’s the story for everyone right now. I can’t complain at all.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “I Deserve Better”?
I’m so excited about this song! It’s a bubblegum pop anthem that I’m confident many listeners can relate to. I also think it’s a great song to lead into the summer months.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
I think at one point or another, everyone has experienced a relationship in which they felt they weren’t treated very well. That has certainly happened to me. Sometimes you need to take a step back from the situation to see how bad it really is. Freeing yourself from that can give you such a sense of power!
Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?
Yes! I’m in the process of orchestrating a dance video for it. That will be a first, and I’m so excited for it!!
How was the recording and writing process?
The writing process was short and sweet, since I was speaking from a place of experience. The lyrics are simple and true. Recording it was such a treat – I used the same team as my first single, “Giving It Up,” so the engineers and producer were familiar with my style. It was seamless and so much fun! I was blown away by how easy it was to create.
What role does Minnesota play in your music?
I grew up listening to whatever my parents would play in their car – as a result, I was shaped by doo-wop, country, boyband pop, and top-40 radio. You can definitely hear those influences in my music.
How does your acapella background actually influences your music as a whole?
I love this question. Since I spent years singing harmony instead of melody as part of a group, backing vocals come really quickly for me. As soon as I track the lead vocal in the studio, I do an upper and lower harmony for all the choruses, and those I can normally do on the fly. I love adding layers of “oooh”s as well, especially in the bridge or final chorus of the song. You can definitely hear my a cappella experience in most of songs, which feature stacked harmonies. They are just so fun to record!
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
I’m working hard creating so much new material! I’ll have a bunch more new songs out by the end of 2020 (maybe even an EP), and I am putting together a new merch line as well. I can’t wait to get some fun new stuff out there.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
I plan on releasing a few more singles in the upcoming months at regular intervals – this strategy has been working great for me and helps keep my fans happy and engaged! I’d love to release a holiday EP near the end of the year, and have already started recording for that.
What else is happening next in Trevor Knight’ world?
I’ve been writing so much during quarantine. I have nearly a dozen fresh songs from the last couple of months, and I can’t wait to get in the studio and record them in the coming weeks. I’m really excited for the rest of 2020, especially to get back on stage!
